Competition films
The Artistic Director of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux , announced at a press conference in Paris on April 19, 2007 the 22 feature film productions that will be represented in the race for the Palme d'Or, three more than last year. Joel Coen ( No Country for Old Men ), Emir Kusturica (Promise Me This), Quentin Tarantino ( Grindhouse - Death Proof ) and Gus Van Sant (Paranoid Park) have already made successful films in the past. Kusturica, represented for the fifth time in Cannes, could have made film history with Promise Me This (original title: Zavet ). No director had ever won the Palme d'Or three times in Cannes. Kusturica received it in 1985 for Papa is on a business trip and in 1995 for Underground . From a German perspective, hopes rested on Fatih Akin . The German-Turkish director competed with On the Other Side , the second part of his “Love, Death and Devil” trilogy. The drama tells the story of six people, including the political activist Ayten ( Nurgül Yeşilçay ), who lives illegally in Germany , who falls in love with Charlotte (Patrycia Ziolkowska), who is of the same age. Opposed to this is the introverted, Turkish-born professor of German studies Nejat (Baki Davrak) who tries to hook up with his father's partner. Most recently, the German Wim Wenders was unsuccessfully represented in the competition with Don't Come Knocking in 2005 . Akin's first trilogy, Gegen die Wand , won him the Golden Bear at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival .

Ulrich Seidl's film Import Export from Austria was considered, which tells of the life of the Ukrainian nurse Olga and Paul the Viennese . The two unemployed seek their fortune in the other region, Olga in the west, Paul in the east. David Fincher took on Zodiac - The Trail of the Killer of the same name, never caught serial killer , who terrified San Francisco in the late 1960s . Fincher's compatriot Julian Schnabel had chosen the former editor of the French Elle , Jean-Dominique Bauby (1952–1997), who suffered a stroke in 1995 at the age of 43 as the main character for his film Butterfly and Diving Bell . This paralyzed almost his entire body and left him only the left eye as a means of communication with which he wrote his memoirs. The award-winning French actor and director Mathieu Amalric played the lead role of Bauby, who suffered from locked-in syndrome , after the American Johnny Depp had previously been traded for the part.
With Persepolis , an animated film also made it into the Cannes competition. The Iranian Marjane Satrapi filmed her comic of the same name together with the French director Vincent Paronnaud , which is about her childhood in Iran and her youth in Vienna and Tehran . Renowned actors such as Catherine Deneuve , Gena Rowlands and Danielle Darrieux were able to be won as speakers . Controversial directors such as Catherine Breillat (Une vieille maitresse) or Carlos Reygadas ( Stellet Licht ) were also considered, while Wong Kar-wais My Blueberry Nights opened the festival. The American singer Norah Jones made her film debut in the English-language road movie , in which she starred alongside renowned actors such as Jude Law , David Strathairn , Tim Roth , Natalie Portman , Ed Harris and Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz .
Of the 22 directors, 13 were represented for the first time with their films in Cannes, which the Berliner Zeitung credited to Frémaux's efforts to rejuvenate the film festival and align it with aesthetic discourse. “For the anniversary, we preferred to mix heritage with modernity, well-known names with offspring,” said Gilles Jacob , Cannes Festival President, at the press conference in Paris. This was also symbolized by the official festival poster, on which Pedro Almodóvar , Juliette Binoche , Jane Campion , Souleymane Cissé , Penélope Cruz , Gérard Depardieu , Samuel L. Jackson , Bruce Willis and Wong Kar-wai could be seen in various jumping poses. The photo collage used portraits of Alex Majoli that were created at last year's film festival.

Soderbergh's film is a sequel to Ocean's Eleven (2001) and Ocean's 12 (2004) and again focuses on George Clooney , who, together with Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, is devoted to crooked business in the casino metropolis Las Vegas .
