Serra Durugonul

Serra Durugönül (born March 6, 1962 in Hamburg ) is a Turkish classical archaeologist .

Life

Durugönül was born as the daughter of the then Turkish commercial attaché Şerafettin Durugönül and his wife Ruhan in Hamburg. She began her school education in Tel Aviv , continued it in Bucharest and Ankara , where she graduated from TED Ankara Koleji in May 1978. In the 1978/79 winter semester she began studying art history at Ankara University . After her father was again transferred to Germany, she continued her studies from the 1979 summer semester at the University of Bonn with the minor subjects Classical Archeology and Oriental Art History. After completing her basic studies, she chose Classical Archeology as her main subject, while maintaining the combination of subjects. She heard lectures from the archaeologists Hanns Gabelmann , Nikolaus Himmelmann , Dieter Salzmann and Ulrich Sinn as well as the art historians Justus Müller Hofstede , Werner Oechslin and Heinrich Lützeler . In 1985 she completed her studies in archeology with a Magister Artium . In 1989, she was with the work The rock carvings in Rough Cilicia doctorate . During her studies she was involved in the excavations at Konya University in Stratonikeia .

Since 1993 she has headed the archaeological department at Mersin University , since October 1998 she has been director of the Center for Archaeological Research in Cilicia (Kilikia Arkeolojisini Araştırma Merkezi) and since July 2000 Professor of Classical Archeology. From 1997 to 2002 she directed excavations in Nagidos . Serra Durugönül is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
