The Sestra ( Russian Сестра ; literally translated: "sister") is a 138 km long left tributary of the Dubna in the European part of Russia .

course

The Sestra forms the outflow of Lake Senesch , which is located in Moscow Oblast about 65 km north of the Russian capital . This lake was created by damming the Sestra and the Istra river . From there the Sestra first flows in a north and north-westerly direction through the densely populated Moscow area. Their course is partly channeled here .

Shortly after the Sestra Klin has flowed through, the Jamuga takes it up. Now it turns mainly in northeastern and eastern directions. The river has numerous oxbow lakes in this area and takes on a large number of small streams and drainage ditches . In Ust-Pristan which opens Yakhroma , its largest tributary, one.

The Sestra then turns north and a little later reaches the border with Tver Oblast . The course of the river marks the border between Moscow Oblasti and Tver until shortly before the mouth of the Sestra . To the southeast of the city of Dubna , the Sestra finally flows into the Dubna.

The Sestra is mainly fed by snowmelt and is frozen on average between November / early January and late March / April.
