Set Your Goals is an American band from Walnut Creek, California . Their music can be assigned to the melodically played hardcore punk , the so-called melodic hardcore , as well as the genre of pop punk .
history
Set Your Goals was founded in 2004. The founders and today's core of the group are the two singers Matt Wilson and Jordan Brown and the drummer Michael Ambrose. The band name comes from the hardcore band CIV , whose first album was entitled Set Your Goals .
Their first EP, Set Your Goals , was distributed by Straight On Records. In 2006 they signed with Eulogy Recordings . With a new label and producer Barrett Jones, who had worked with Nirvana among others , the album Mutiny! developed. As a result, they toured with bands like Anti-Flag , Alexisonfire and Ignite and played the entire Vans Warped Tour in 2008 .
In August 2008 they bought themselves out of their contract with Eulogy Records for an estimated $ 125,000. The reason for this were disputes about the distribution of profits between the band and the record label. In March 2009 they signed with Epitaph Records . In July 2009 they released the album This Will Be the Death of Us . They were supported by producer Mike Green, who had previously worked with bands such as Paramore and The Matches . Set Your Goals then toured with bands such as All Time Low and Four Year Strong . You played the entire 2010 Vans Warped Tour .
style
Set Your Goals plays Melodic Hardcore, which is influenced by Pop-Punk. Singer Matt Wilson sees the band musically in a gray area between hardcore punk and rock . The band members still feel they belong to the hardcore scene (Matt Wilson: "We love hardcore music still and we are very proud of that."). Unique to the genre is that Set Your Goals has two lead singers. This makes the music dynamic and encourages audience interaction when performing live, according to Jordan Brown.
The band's lyrics are principally about everyday problems (Jordan Brown: "real topics") and convey a positive attitude towards life. This is not least due to the straight edge belief of some band members.
The answers.com portal compares Set Your Goals with bands like New Found Glory , Gorilla Biscuits and CIV. The band cites Strike Anywhere , Gorilla Biscuits and Kid Dynamite as influences.
