Seth Henry Helgeson (born October 8, 1990 in Faribault , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League since July 2017 and for their farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in the American Hockey League plays on the position of defender .
Career
Helgeson spent his junior years between 2007 and 2009 with the Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League . From there, the defender moved to the University of Minnesota after he had previously been selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in 114th position by the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League . At the University of Minnesota, the American played parallel to his studies for the following four years until spring 2013 for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time he was elected to the WCHA's All-Academic Team twice.
In April 2013, Helgeson was initially signed on trial by the Albany Devils , the New Jerseys farm team from the American Hockey League , and played four games over the remainder of the 2012/13 season . A few weeks later he finally received an offer from New Jersey, where he committed himself for two years. Initially, the defender was only used for Albany in the AHL and it was not until the 2014/15 season before he made his debut in the NHL. Over the course of the season - as well as the two following - Helgeson commuted repeatedly between AHL and NHL after his contract was extended by two years in the summer of 2015.
After the 2016/17 season, however, his expiring contract was not extended, so Helgeson joined the New York Islanders as a free agent in July 2017 .

For his home country, Helgeson played in the World Junior A Challenges in 2007 and 2008 . He won the bronze medal in 2007 and the gold medal in 2008.
