Sex Monster ( The Sex Monster ) is an American film comedy of Mike Binder from the year 1999 .

action

Marty Barnes ( Mike Binder ) is a middle-class citizen who, at first glance, leads a perfect life: He has a good job, a beautiful house and Laura ( Mariel Hemingway ) is an even more beautiful wife. At the same time, he feels a certain dissatisfaction and - inspired by men's magazines - has fantasies of a so-called threesome . If he does not gently urge his wife to implement it, he will discuss it with his male friends. At first she is rather negative about the idea, then she accepts it. The couple invited Didi ( Renée Humphrey ), a bisexual colleague from the hairdressing salon, to dinner and after a few teething problems he came to realize Marty's fantasy for the first time. Laura first takes a couple of drinks and takes courage to take part in Marty and Didi's love game. Marty, meanwhile, pulls out of this first act early due to exhaustion and listens to the wait while his wife goes through the entire act. When asked, Laura describes her first lesbian experience comparatively soberly as “instructive”. Nevertheless, she literally got a taste for it, so that subsequently seduces a number of women - and always invites their negative partner to participate - including Diva ( Missy Crider ), Marty's secretary, and the wife of his business partner.

In a "typical way" things get out of hand in the second half of the film when Laura's new preferences influence Marty's business life: She gets involved with Evie Pembroke ( Joanna Heimbold ), her husband Dave ( Christopher Lawford ) Her own husband wants to get a lucrative deal. But what actually throws Marty off track is the fact that his wife also gets involved with his sister ( Kara Zediker ). Things are then brought to a conclusion or brought back into line relatively quickly. Marty Barnes loses friends and business partners in the last quarter of the film, but at his request, his wife Laura only devotes herself to making love in marriage.

Reviews

"A subtly developed story with a tragic-comic element, which functions as a successful farce about dusty marriages over long distances and pushes the apparently strong male gender onto the sidelines of his own fantasies and ultimately grants him the role of morally moronic guardian."

"In her best performance so far", Hemingway revealed "a feeling for comedy" ( English " Hemingway unveils a flair for comedy in her best performance yet " ), judged the bimonthly LGBT magazine The Advocate .

The comedy does not make the viewer cry with laughter, but he always has a smile on his face, stated the British BBC (“There's not much that will reduce you to tears of laughter in this film but it keeps a smile on your face throughout ").

For Variety , the industry journal for the entertainment industry, Todd McCarthy came up with an opposing position: If you watch the film without expectations, it could be liked. Otherwise, given the general conditions - u. a. no big actor names and no nude scenes - unclear who the target group or how big it should be.

In their review, the Cinema editorial team described the film as an “erotic farce” with an “amazingly prudish” look: it was “a lot of talk about sex, sometimes even funny”, but little was seen. Instead, you can see who the actor and director is actually in love with - "namely in old Woody Allen films that he apes moderately inspired".

In a review of the DVD, Nathan Rubin et al. a. that the farce is not funny and filled with characters drawn like a silhouette. For example, Mariel Hemingway is defined solely by her sexuality.
