story

Sheffield FC plays a special role in the history of football . In 1855 the members of a local cricket club met for the very original and - in the absence of a set of rules - chaotic "kicking around". This very early form of recreational football or "bolt" took place regularly for two years before switching to a "more serious" game mode in 1857.

The two Britons William Perst and Nathaniel Creswick were cricket enthusiasts , but regretted that the sport could only be enjoyed in summer. The two men were looking for a sport that could still be played in winter and that should be guided by a competitive spirit. Football , they decided, was the right answer to this need. Sheffield FC was founded in October 1857. Creswick became the club's coach and Perst took the lead in establishing a set of rules.

The Sheffield Rules , drawn up in 1859, are the world's first modern football set of rules and represent innovations, the importance of which is evident on the one hand from their large contribution to the founding of the English Football Association (FA) in 1863 and from the fact that many of the rules of the time are still today Have consisted. The corner kick , the throw-in and the crossbar are among the most important inventions . Sheffield FC hosted floodlit games in 1878 , the first international football game (1872) and the first derby . The latter took place on December 26, 1860 between Sheffield FC and local rivals Hallam FC . Today the derby is one of the oldest still existing team sport derbies in the world. At that time the game was played on the oldest football pitch in the world, the so-called “Hallam Pitch at Sandygate Lane” in Sheffield.

Sheffield also developed values that still give the game its character and power today: integrity, respect and community. For its achievements in football and the undeniable influence of its values on the game, Sheffield FC was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit , the highest honor for individuals and clubs, by the world football association FIFA . Sheffield FC is - besides Real Madrid - the only club in the world to have received this award. The award took place on the occasion of FIFA's centenary in 2004, when Real Madrid were named the most successful and Sheffield FC as the oldest club.

Because of the importance of the status as an amateur club , the FC was overtaken by the more popular professional clubs Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the 19th century . Today he plays in the Northern Premier League Division One South, the fourth highest amateur league in England, which is synonymous with the eighth level of the English league system .

Due to its history and its fundamental achievements for football, the club Sheffield FC is today based on its own foundation, the so-called "Sheffield FC Foundation". Its aim is to keep Sheffield FC permanently in its amateur club status and, with it, the legacy of 1857 to found an institution outside of professional football and to provide perspectives for future pioneers of amateur football. Above all, the foundation's vision is to preserve the roots and natural values of football and to fight for a better world through playing football. With this in mind, the foundation has initiated various local and global projects.

In 2012, Sheffield FC started an action under the motto "Happy Birthday Football" for the 155th anniversary to turn the amateur club into a global brand, thereby attracting sponsors and fans and thus securing the club's financial future. For this purpose, a brand image was designed in advance in cooperation with the marketing agency UFA Sports around the unique selling point "oldest football club in the world". Sheffield FC was to become "everyone's second favorite football club". The club coat of arms has been visually revised for this purpose. In addition, the founding day was communicated as the birthday of all of football and distributed via various digital channels such as Facebook , Twitter , Pinterest , YouTube and the club's own website. In addition, top international clubs and the associations FIFA and UEFA were asked to take part. Ultimately, the campaign was a success: on October 24, 2012, the number of Facebook fans doubled from 10,000 to 20,000, congratulations from over 75 countries were received on Twitter under #happybirthdayfootball and news channels all over the world reported. Subsequently, the so-called “Club of Pioneers” was able to increase awareness and attract sponsors.
