Shimokita-gun (Aomori)
Shimokita ( Japanese 下 北 郡 , -gun ) is a district in Aomori Prefecture in Japan . It is located at the northern end of the Japanese main island of Honshū on the Shimokita Peninsula west and east of the city of Mutsu .
In 2003 the population was 36,000, with a total area of 1,168.90 km² that is a population density of 30.83 people per km².
Since then, however, the small towns of Kawauchi ( 川 内 町 , -machi ), Ōhata ( 大 畑 町 , -machi ) and the village of Wakinosawa ( 脇 野 沢 村 , -mura ) (including Osorezan ) have been incorporated into the city of Mutsu. The district has lost a third of its population and around half of its area and has (as of June 1, 2019) only 14,546 residents on 550.98 km². It therefore only includes the coastal strips south and east of Cape Ōma in the northeast of the peninsula (Kazamaura, Ōma and Sai), as well as the area around Cape Shiriya ( 尻 屋 崎 , Shiriya-saki ) in the northeast (Higashidōri). The northernmost point of Honshūs is still in Shimokita.
There is also a population of Japanese macaques among the native animal species, making them the most northerly living monkeys in the world.
