action

Maine psychologist Mary Portman loses her husband in a car accident, her teenage stepson Stephen remains paralyzed and silent and has to be looked after by her.

One night one of her patients, nine-year-old deaf Tom, breaks into her car. She takes him into her house, but then he disappears without a trace and cannot be found despite a police manhunt. Mary is invited to dinner by a patient's father, Doug. After some hesitation, she accepts and the two of them have dinner with Mary.

Strange incidents ensue and Mary believes that Tom is secretly walking around the house. Several times he seems to meet her in the dark. Stephen is out of bed one night and has small scratches on his cheek the next morning. She contacts her therapist Dr. Wilson and describes the events to him. He waves it aside and instead suspects a parasomnia , which is why he has a blood test.

The blood test results showed high abnormalities, which is why Dr. Wilson accuses Mary in a video call of consuming her son's heavy medication. Mary rejects this and breaks off the conversation. Dr. Wilson can still see Stephen leaving his wheelchair in the background and walking around the house. He realizes that Mary's worries were justified and tries to warn her, but the communication network breaks down due to a snow storm. He made an emergency call in vain and went to Mary's house in the car.

Looking for firewood, Mary meets Tom and Stephen in the basement. Stephen knocks her out. She wakes up tied up in the bathtub. Stephen explains that for the past six months after the accident, he only acted out his paralysis to get more attention from Mary. He locked Tom in the basement and wanted to kill him because he had seen him walking around the house and his lie was threatened with being exposed. He also secretly administered his medication to her. He also caused the fatal accident with his father on purpose in order to have Mary to himself.

When Stephen leaves to kill Tom, Mary manages to free herself. But Stephen is followed by Dr. Wilson, who arrives at the house and is stabbed by Stephen. While Stephen is looking for Tom in the house, Mary tries to escape with Tom through the back door, which is blocked by the corpse of her friend Doug, who had checked Mary's house shortly before the snowstorm and was apparently murdered by Stephen.

Only through a trick does Mary then succeed in deceiving Stephen and escaping into the forest with Tom. But Stephen approaches and tries to drown Tom in the lake, whereupon Mary kills him with a hammer.

In the final scene, Tom and Mary drive to the adoption office.

The surprising twist at the end is extremely silly conceived and executed in the same way.
