Si Saowaphak (full name Somdet Phra Si Saowaphak , Thai : สมเด็จ พระ ศรี เสาวภาคย์ , also: Phrabat Somdet Phra Sanphet IV - พระบาท สมเด็จ พระ สรรเพชญ ที่ ๔ ; †  1611 ?) Was King of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in Siam (now Thailand ) as the successor to King Ekathotsarot .

Lineage and Life

Prince Si Saowaphak was the son of King Ekathotsarot. His older brother, Prince Suthat, was appointed Uparat (viceroy and heir to the throne) in 1607 , but shortly afterwards he was accused of conspiracy against the king by Paya Nai Wai and sentenced to death by Ekathotsarot with a heavy heart. The king was expected to appoint his second eldest son, Prince Si Saowaphak, as crown prince, but the king did nothing in that direction.

When King Ekathotsarot died in 1610, Prince Si Saowaphak succeeded him to the throne. It is said that Si Saowaphak was blind in one eye and is completely unsuitable for the office. Only a few months after the accession to the throne, the Defense Minister ( Thai : ออกญา กลาโหม - Okya Kalahom ) Suriyawong, later King Prasat Thong , led a coup in which Si Saowaphak was killed and his brother Prince Si Sin (later King Songtham ) was killed on 16. November 1611 ascended the throne.

King Si Saowaphak is referred to by some historians as a "phantom king" or "phantom king", as there are few written evidence of his rule. For example, Si Saowaphak was made by the chronicler Jeremias Van Vliet , merchant of the VOC , who lived in Ayutthaya from 1633 to 1642, in his "Brief History of the Thai Kings" (Cort Verhael van't naturel eijnde der tijt ende successie der Coningen van Siam, voor sooveel daer bij d'oude historien confess sijn) from 1640 is not mentioned at all.
