Sidney is a city at the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula , on Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia .
On a clear day, the volcanoes Mount Baker in the east and Mount Rainier in the southeast can be seen on the American mainland .
The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on September 30, 1952 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ). Since January 1, 1967 Sidney has the status of a Town Municipality .
location
The city is part of the Greater Victoria metropolitan area , in the Capital Regional District and borders the municipality of North Saanich in the northwest and the municipality of Central Saanich in the south . The town is just off Haro Street , which connects the Georgia Straits and Juan de Fuca Streets .
Demographics
The 2011 census showed a population of 11,178 residents for the municipality. The population has decreased by 1.2% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in British Columbia increased by 7.0%. The median age of the inhabitants is 56.9 years, well above the provincial average of 41.9 years.
economy
The median income of workers in Sydney in 2005 was an above-average $ 28,131, while at the same time the average for the entire province of British Columbia was only $ 24,867. The income difference between men (C $ 36,067; provincial average = C $ 31,598) and women (C $ 23,225; provincial average = C $ 19,997) is roughly the same in Sydney as in the income comparison for the entire province.

Sidney is east on Highway 17 . West of the town lies the Victoria International Airport and north of the Ferry Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal . Ferries to and from the mainland (via Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal ) as well as from and to Anacortes ( Washington ) run from the small seaport . Since Anacortes is approached from the ferry port, Sidney is the only place in British Columbia that is served by the Washington State Ferry .

The main tourist attraction of the place is its location on Haro Street. Its ports and jetties are the starting point for the southern islands of the Gulf Islands National Park .
The projects to profile Sidney as a book village are not very far advanced. There are only twelve second-hand bookshops in town.
