action

After the accidental death of his wife, farmer Aymé Pigrenet misses not so much affection as a worker. Taken to the full by cultivation and livestock farming, he is unable to run the household, handle the dirty laundry and dirty dishes. None of the women on site meet his expectations. Just ten days after the death of his wife, he turned to a marriage agency whose manageress took him to Romania so that he could choose a suitable candidate from those wishing to leave the country.

Most of the young women he meets there, however, want to be singers and not peasants and each time they end their interview with the memorized sentence “You are a beautiful man”. Only Elena, who wants to go abroad in order to earn the money she needs to open a dance school and her little daughter, realizes early enough what the farmer is after and behaves in such a way that she is allowed to travel to France with him. To his acquaintances and friends, Aymé explains Elena as "the daughter of the brother of my wife's sponsored child" who wants to do an internship on his farm. Coexistence is not easy. It soon crashes between the young and fun-loving Elena and the older, grumpy farmer. While Elena suffers from longing for her child and family, Aymé feels inferior next to his new roommate. After all, he pretends that she has won 16,500 euros in a horse bet, but that it comes from his savings. Elena flies back to her homeland. When she moved into a new apartment, she noticed from a French newspaper she had brought with her and used as wrapping paper that her tip was not correct. Together with her daughter, she travels back to Aymé, who welcomes them with open arms.

criticism

Initially a mixture of situation comedy, development novel and grotesque, the film gradually turns into a romantic comedy in the second half. Regarding the rural population portrayed, the critics said that the film avoided an idyllic depiction of their way of life, portrayed them as quirky, but did not make them ridiculous, or portrayed the rural milieu in a charming way. epd Film judged: "East-West clichés are rather lovingly, playfully staged and add a lot to the charm of the film." Die Welt clarified in the introduction that the comedy does not slander any nation, profession or gender . The director and screenwriter Isabelle Mergault “does not hide the bitter reality” despite the comedy, found the Frankfurter Rundschau . They play down the aspect that the farmer is taking advantage of the need in Romania, but it does not hide it. The fairytale, politically incorrect ending can scare some viewers away. According to the film service , the issue of buying women is treated offensive. "The satirizing, somewhat disrespectful look at the women who offered themselves would not be a problem if the film didn't portray the arranged marriage towards the end in a completely naive way as a real option for happiness and romantic love."

The "film that is deliberately aimed at a broad audience" is entertaining over the entire length, stated epd Film . Mergault shows a "solid feeling for the slightly hearty" and cleverly stage the comedy. Regarding Aymé's collection of documents from his “Germany trip” in Romania, the Frankfurter Rundschau said : “Seldom has a film brought the disappearance of national peculiarities in the age of globalization so casually and yet so aptly to the point.” Although the plot is conventional and predictable, but Mergault proves an “extraordinary eye for the small, grotesque details of everyday life.” But precisely because the director has demonstrated a lot of realism beforehand, the fairytale ending seems trite and not believable. The taz described the comedy as sparsely staged and determined by a “subtle and at times somewhat insidious humor”. Der Spiegel found the film not exactly original, but old-fashionedly charming . The film service said that the not very original scheme of the man who buys a woman and then falls in love with her, is modified with "quirky" ideas. The story is characterized by both successful comedic passages and staged gags. The world praised the arrangement of feelings by the matchmaking industry: ... "It is a beautiful trick to settle him in the most desolate peasant milieu, where the word community of convenience still has hand and foot." Here, "a feather-light story succeeds on quite arduous ground." “The director breathes“ the soul of a possible success ”into an impossible love. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung also approves of the staging : “Mergault's greatest strength is to credibly tell whole life processes with just a few pictures.” The large dose of the grotesque is absorbed by Blanc's minimalist style of play. The rather known as an intellectual actor, here unusually cast Michel Blanc subtly shows the emotional development of his character. Fine personal developments could be read from him, which are "wonderfully touching and very funny".
