Sierd APL Cloetingh , completely Sierd Auke Pieter Leonard Cloetingh (born August 20, 1950 in Groningen ) is a Dutch geologist and geophysicist .

Life

Cloetingh received his intermediate diploma in geology from the University of Groningen in 1972 and his diploma in geophysics from the University of Utrecht in 1977 . Since 1977 he has been a junior lecturer in geophysics in Utrecht, where he received his doctorate from Nicolaas Jacob Vlaar (1933–2011) in 1982 ( Evolution of passive margins and initiation of subduction zones ), was senior lecturer in geophysics from 1983 and assistant professor for tectonophysics from 1986. Since 1988 he has been Professor of Tectonics at the Free University of Amsterdam . In 2006 he became an academy professor at KNAW.

He deals with tectonics , dynamics of the lithosphere , intra-plate deformation, evolution of sedimentary basins and global sea level changes. He investigates tectonic processes experimentally on models and in the field, especially in the Rhine Trench, the Pannonian Basin and the Carpathian Mountains, the Atlantic coast of Norway and Spain. Since his research into the development of sedimentary basins is also relevant to the oil industry, he worked closely with scientists from Shell . He also works a lot with scientists from Eastern Europe.

His tectonics group in Amsterdam is part of the Dutch Research Center for Integrated Solid Earth Sciences (ISES) with the Meinesz Research School of Geodynamics in Utrecht and the Center for Geotechnics in Delft . He is the initiator and head of the Eurocores research program (European Collaborative Research Scheme) Topo-Europe (4-D Topography Evolution in Europe).

Cloetingh has over 250 scientific publications and supervised over 50 PhD students (2011). He is the editor of Global and Planetary Changes .

Among other things, he was visiting professor at the ETH Zurich , the University of Paris VI , Tel Aviv (Sackler Professur)

In 1995 he received the Leopold von Buch badge . He is a member of the Academia Europaea (1993), whose President he became in 2014, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW) (1998), the Norwegian Academy of Sciences , the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences , Russian Academy of Sciences (1995) and member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) . He has multiple honorary doctorates ( Loránd Eötvös University Budapest , Rennes, Salzburg , Bucharest). He is an honorary member of the Geological Society of America and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union . In 2006 he received the Stephan Mueller Medal of the European Geosciences Union, in 1996 the Golden Badge Award of the European Geophysical Society, in 2007 the Van Waterschoot van der Gracht Medal of the Royal Dutch Geological and Mining Society and in 2017 the Emil Wiechert Medal of the Germans Geophysical Society. In 1993 he was a Distinguished Lecturer for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. In 2005 he became a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

He is on the scientific council of the European Research Council . From 1998 to 2000 he was President of the European Geophysical Union .
