Sigwald Bommer

Sigwald Bommer (born June 23, 1893 in Dresden , † August 11, 1963 in Greifswald ) was a German dermatologist . He researched the effectiveness of nutritional therapies for skin diseases .

Life

From 1911 Bommer studied medicine at the Universities of Gießen , Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main . In Giessen he was a member of the Corps Teutonia . During the First World War he worked as a field medical officer. In 1919 he was licensed as a doctor. First he was a volunteer assistant at the municipal hospital in Mannheim in 1920 , then until 1921 assistant at the Samariterhaus in Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate . He then worked for three years from 1922 to 1924 as an assistant doctor at the University Skin Clinic in Heidelberg.

In 1925 he went to the Gießen University Skin Clinic, where he completed his habilitation in 1928 . There he worked under the direction of Albert Jesionek , with whom he examined from 1928 the therapy developed by Max Gerson for its effectiveness in lupus vulgaris (skin tuberculosis). In fact, he was able to observe healing through a change in diet in over 600 patients. For the treatment of other skin diseases, Bommer developed its own nutritional therapies.

In 1931 he became a research assistant with Ferdinand Sauerbruch at the University Dermatology Clinic of the Charité in Berlin, in 1935 senior physician and in 1938 associate professor for dermatology at the Friedrich Wilhelm University . In 1939 he became a consultant nutritionist at the university clinics. From 1940 he was head of the university skin polyclinic. As dean , he later also headed the medical faculty.

Bommer had already joined the SA in 1933 . In 1934 he was appointed representative for tuberculosis nutrition of the "Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaft für Volksernichtung". In 1937 he joined the NSDAP , with whose help he founded the 1938 Institute of Nutrition , which he headed from 1941. In addition, in 1941 he was appointed representative for nutritional issues to the Reichsleitung German Labor Front (Office for Health and People's Protection). Sigwald Bommer was a member of the National Socialist German Medical Association , the National Socialist German Lecturer Association , the Reich Association of German Civil Servants , the National Socialist People's Welfare and the National Socialist Teachers Association . In 1944, Bommer was a member of the scientific advisory board of Karl Brandt , the authorized representative for health care .

In 1950 he became full professor of dermatology at the University of Greifswald and remained in this position until 1962. From 1953 to 1956 he was dean of the medical faculty. In 1956 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin in the nutrition and dermatology sections. From 1957 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the International Society for Research on Food and Vital Substances . In 1959 he became a part-time director of the clinical physiology of nutrition department at the Institute for Nutritional Research in Potsdam-Rehbrücke . In 1963 he was appointed director of the institute, but died that same year.
