The Silberen is a hilltop on the Pragel Pass , which gave its name to the protected landscape of the same name. The name is derived from the light color of the bare rock.

It is a karst landscape that is unique in Switzerland and has all intermediate levels from bare rock to closed vegetation cover and subalpine forest.

The Karrenfeld , which is the largest in Switzerland, is a specialty . The Karrenfeld is mainly a formation in the Schrattenkalk , which was deposited about 125 million years ago.

In winter the Silberen is a popular mountain for ski tours.

A protected area also includes the westernmost of the Silberen Bödmerenwald forest in the upper part of the Muotatals , a subalpine spruce forest , the largest pine forest of the Alps is. Because of the numerous karst holes and sinkholes , one should strictly stick to the paths in the forest.
