The sticky light carnation is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 70 centimeters. The independently upright stem is often unbranched. The above-ground parts of the plant are densely covered with sticky hairs ( indument ). The foliage leaves are arranged in a basal rosette and arranged opposite to one another on the stem. The stem leaves are lanceolate and wavy on the edge.

Many flowers stand together in a racemose inflorescence . The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The calyx is 12 to 20 mm long and ten-nerved. She has no side crown. The five white petals are 18 to 28 mm long with a deep two-column plate . There are three styluses.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The sticky light carnation is widespread from Europe via the Caucasus and Iran to Pakistan and India . The main distribution area of ​​the sticky light carnation is in Eastern Europe , southern Siberia and northern Iran. In Central Europe it occurs only in Denmark , on Rügen and very rarely in rocks near the coast on Hiddensee. It occurs in Lower Austria and scattered in Burgenland. In the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in Germany 1996, it is listed in category 0, which means that it was native to the area of ​​Germany, but is extinct or lost.

The sticky carnation thrives best on sandy soils that are poor in lime , but rich in nutrients . It thrives in a climate with rather dry and warm summers. It colonizes salty steppe meadows in Central Europe , but also goes to roadsides and dams. It grows in companies of the Corynephorion association and occurs in the Pannonian lowlands in companies of the Festucion pseudovinae association.

On the Baltic Sea coast, the sticky light carnation grows close to the coast in rocky cliffs that are used by migratory birds as resting places. It can therefore be assumed that the seeds of the sticky cucumber are spread by migrating birds. These northern locations are not up to the norm. It is possible that the species there will become competitive, even superior, because it is not damaged by the highly concentrated bird manure, but fertilized.
