Simon Phillips (racing driver)
Simon Phillips (born August 21, 1934 in London - † October 16, 2013 ) was a British racing car driver .
Racing career
Simon Phillips was active in sports car racing in the 1970s and 1980s . In 1976 he made his debut in the sports car world championship at the 4-hour race in Monza . Together with Ian Harrower , he drove a Lola T294S to ninth place in the overall standings (overall winners Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass in a Porsche 936 ). He achieved his best placement in the world championship a year later , when he was back in Monza and finished seventh in the overall standings (winner Vittorio Brambilla in an Alfa Romeo T33 / SC / 12 ). This time his partner was the Dutchman Ernst Berg .
Between 1976 and 1982 he competed in the Le Mans 24-hour race six times . In 1976, on his debut, he drove a Lola T290 / 4 together with Tony Birchenhough , Ian Bracey and Brian Joscelyne to 22nd place overall. In 1982 he was part of Robin Hamilton's team with Mike Salmon and Ray Mallock , which used the Nimrod NRA / C2 powered by an Aston Martin engine . The trio reached seventh place in the final ranking.
