Sleiman Hajjar

Sleiman Hajjar BS (born May 13, 1950 in Jezzine , Lebanon , † March 10, 2002 in Florida , USA ) was the second bishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church of Saint-Sauveur de Montréal in Canada .

Life

Hajjar spent his childhood in a religious family. He studied at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut and obtained a degree in business administration . Then he began his studies in liturgy and theology at the Holy Spirit University Kaslik . He was fluent in Arabic , English and French . On August 4, 1979, he was appointed Chaplain of the Melkite Basilian Salvatorian Order ordained . From 1979 to 1995 he worked in several Melkite parishes as a teacher and parish administrator as well as rector . At the same time he was involved in social and cultural projects. He found his pastoral focus in youth pastoral care . In 1995 he took over the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Ottawa in Canada.

On July 10, 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Saint-Sauveur de Montréal, he succeeded Michel Hakim . He was ordained bishop on August 6, 1998 by the Patriarch of Antioch , Archbishop Maximos V. Hakim ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Michel Hakim BS and Bishop Issam John Darwich BS of Sydney . On March 10, 2002, Bishop Hajjar died of sudden cardiac death while on vacation in Florida (USA) after only four years in office. Bishop Ibrahim Michael Ibrahim was named to succeed him.
