The Smith Inlet is an icy 24 km wide bay at the Wilkins Coast of Palmer Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It lies between Cape Boggs and Cape Collier .
Scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) discovered and photographed the inlet during an overflight in December 1940, but mistakenly described it as Stefansson Inlet . Further aerial photographs were taken in 1947 during the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948), which also carried out geodetic surveys in collaboration with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey . Finn Ronne , leader of the expedition, named the inlet after Rear Admiral Edward Hanson Smith (1889–1961) of the United States Coast Guard , a recognized Arctic explorer and later director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution .
