The soldier is generally the lowest rank in the armed forces of a state . In the German Federal Armed Forces it is a rank, but not a rank designation, and in Switzerland one of the degrees in the Swiss Army .

In the Swiss Army , the soldier is by far the most common rank in the team. In contrast to other armies, a soldier does not automatically become a private after a few months of service . In the Swiss Army, the rank badge shows a diagonal bar on the armpit loops.

In the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR and in the border troops of the GDR , the rank of soldier was the lowest rank of the teams . The equivalent in the People's Navy was a sailor . At the end of the second half of the year, the soldiers were regularly promoted to private.

In the armed forces of the NATO the soldier is the NATO ranking code associated OR -1. In the English-speaking world , according to the NATO rank code, private often corresponds to the lowest rank (in the British armed forces Private , in Canada Private (Recruit) and in the US Army E-1 ).
