Teichalm and Sommeralm form one of the largest contiguous alpine pastures in the Alps. It is located around 30 km northeast of Graz in the Grazer Bergland and belongs to the communities of Fladnitz an der Teichalm , Passail and Sankt Kathrein am Offenegg . The Teichalm region is the heart of the Styrian Almenland .

Surname

In addition to the designation Sommeralm also used to be in terms of tourism in some summer Alpe used. In the Bavarian language area, Alm is the usual name for a mountain pasture, the Alemannic expression is Alpe .

geography

The east-west extension of the area is around 8 km, but the north-south extension is only around 2 km. It is an old landscape at high altitude that is drained westwards by the Mixnitzbach . This runs west of the Teichalm between the Hochlantsch ( 1722  m ) and the Rote Wand ( 1505  m ). It overcomes the difference in altitude from the Teichalm (approx. 1200 m) to the Murtal (approx. 450 m) in the Bärenschützklamm . The Mixnitzbach drains towards the Mur, all other streams and rivers drain into the Raab , which rises on the Osser. The area is thus also a watershed .

history

The clearing of today's alpine pastures took place in the late Middle Ages. The abundant quartz and lime formed the basis for glass production ; the wood was needed as fuel. It was only afterwards that the resulting free areas were used for pasture. The entire Teichalm and Sommeralm alpine pasture area is divided into around 150 individual alpine pastures. These are mostly owned by agricultural communities and proportionally divided between the participating farmers. The ownership structures are very persistent, they have hardly changed in the last few centuries.

geology

The subsoil of the entire area belongs to the Graz Paleozoic , a limestone cover that is covered by the tertiary deposits south of Graz , but rises to the Hochlantsch in the north. Immediately at its summit, it breaks off steeply to the north.

State roads lead from the south from Fladnitz an der Teichalm, from the north from the Breitenau, and from the east from St. Kathrein am Offenegg to the Teichalm or Sommeralm.

In addition to the natural beauties , the area, which is little affected by tourism, offers the Teichalmsee lake , which can be ridden with pedal boats . The Teichwirt , which is a tourist center of the Teichalm, and the Latschenhütte are also located here .

The Hochlantsch and Bärenschützklamm are ideal hiking destinations , although the ascent from the Breitenau or Mixnitz is more spectacular than from the Teichalm. The hike over the Tyrnauer Alm to the Rote Wand is also attractive (suitable for young and old). The Almenland hiking trail leads from the Teichalm via the Sommeralm to the Brandlucken (walking time around 3 hours). The Sommeralm is also located on Mariazellerweg  06, which continues in the direction of Straßegg, and on Zentralalpenweg  02, which runs west from here to Bärenschützklamm.

In winter, the Teichalm, Holzmeister and Pirstinger lifts are available.
