Soner Çağaptay

Soner Cagaptay (* 1970 ) is a Turkish university professor and the director of the Turkish Research Program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy .

He writes extensively on US-Turkish relations, Turkish domestic politics, and Turkish nationalism, and publishes regularly in journals and international print media, including the Wall Street Journal , Washington Times , Los Angeles Times , International Herald Tribune , Jane's Defense Weekly, and Newsweek Türkiye. He is also a regular columnist for Hürriyet , one of the oldest and most influential newspapers, and regularly appears as an expert on Turkey on Fox News , CNN , NPR , Voice of America , Al-Jazeera , BBC , CNN-Turk and al-Hurray .

Life

Çağaptay studied at Marmara University and then at Bilkent University in Turkey, before writing his doctoral thesis at Yale University (2003) on Turkish nationalism . At Yale and Princeton , he taught on the Middle East , the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe . His course on modern Turkish history in the spring of 2003 was the first course on this subject at Yale in three decades. From 2006 to 2007 he was a professor at Princeton University's Department of Near Eastern Studies. He was then a visiting professor at Georgetown University 's School of Foreign Service. His current research area is the future of Turkey as an ally of the USA , the social and political change under the AKP government, Turkish foreign policy under the AKP , Turkey's accession to the EU and the PKK and their infrastructure in Europe. He speaks Turkish, English, German, French, Spanish, Bosnian, Ottoman Turkish, Hebrew and Azerbaijani.

Awards

Dr. Cagaptay has received numerous awards, grants, and chairs, including those from the Smith-Richardson Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and Leylan Fellowships, and the Ertegun Professorship at Princeton.
