Sonic and the Secret Rings ( jap. :ソニックと秘密のリング, Hepburn : Sonikku to Himitsu no Ringu . English Sonic and the Secret Rings ) is a 3D platformers Run - video game , which by the Sonic Team developed and was first released by Sega in North America on February 20, 2007 for the Nintendo Wii .

It is a spin-off of the series in which Sonic is drawn into the storybook of the Arabian Nights . The biggest peculiarity of the game is the movement control by rotating and tilting the Wiimote .

The game received, also on the Nintendo Wii, a sequel called Sonic and the Black Knight (2009).

action

The ring spirit Shahra reaches the sleeping Sonic and pulls him into the storybook of a thousand and one nights , where the evil Erazor Djinn from Aladdin's magic lamp is about to destroy the pages of the book and with it the worlds of a thousand and one nights. Sonic agrees to help and collects the seven rings of the world to defeat Erazor Djinn. He receives help from Ali Baba ( Tails ), Sindbad ( Knuckles ) and King Shahryar ( Dr. Eggman ).

In the fight between Sonic and Erazor Djinn, Shahra throws herself into Erazor Djinn's sword attack and sacrifices himself to save Sonic's life. So Erazor Djinn has the power of the seven world rings and transforms into Alf-Layla-wa-Layla, but Sonic also transforms into Darkspine Sonic and manages to defeat Alf-Layla-wa-Layla. Back in the form of Erazor Djinn, Sonic is in possession of the magic lamp and thus his master. He uses his three wishes to love Shahra again, to completely restore the Book of the Arabian Nights and to keep Erazor Djinn forever imprisoned in Aladdin's magic lamp. With peace regained, Sonic returns to his world, although it remains unclear whether he only dreamed all of this.

Gameplay

In Sonic and the Secret Rings , the player takes control of the blue hedgehog Sonic in a three-dimensional platformer. Sonic runs by itself and the player can move the character by tilting the Wiimote to the left or right in the appropriate direction, jump or brake at the push of a button. When the brakes are applied, it is also possible to carefully walk backwards by turning the Wiimote towards you. In the air, Sonic can perform a homing attack on opponents by jerking the Wiimote forward .

The game consists of eight action stages ( Lost Prologue , Sand Oasis , Dinosaur Jungle , Evil Foundry , Levitated Ruin , Pirate Storm , Skeleton Dome and Night Palace ) that can be defined as levels . You have to master tasks in different levels in order to unlock new tasks and levels. If you master the tasks, the story moves forward. At the same time, you can collect fire souls, which unlock mini-games for multiplayer mode . As you play, Sonic levels up, which gives you skill points. Limited by the skill points, Sonic can be given various abilities, such as jumping further or running faster. There are around 100 different skills that can be combined with one another in almost any way.

In multiplayer mode, players compete against each other in various mini-games in order to achieve the goal. The odds are best for whoever wins the most mini-games. At the beginning, the characters Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy are available to choose from, and Shadow, Silver, Blaze and Cream can also be unlocked through collected fire souls in single player mode.

development

During the development of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) , Sega requested not only a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version of the game from the Sonic team , but also a port for Nintendo's upcoming Nintendo Wii console , which at the time was still under the development name Nintendo Revolution wore. It quickly became clear, however, that this was hardly technically possible, which is why they decided on a completely new game tailored to the system. For this, the Sonic team was halved, so that half under Shun Nakamura continued to work on Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and the other half began developing the Wii game under the direction of Yojiro Ogawa. From the start, Yojiro Ogawa had in mind to steer Sonic using motion control.

The game was first seen at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006 under the development name Sonic Wild Fire . At a later Nintendo press event it was called Hyper Sonic and then Sonic and the Secret of the Rings , before it was renamed to the final, international title Sonic and the Secret Rings , the German version of which is called Sonic and the Secret Rings .

The game received mixed ratings, as the pure movement control was viewed as differently promoting or reducing the fun of the game.

Sonic and the Secret Rings was sold a total of 1.2 million times worldwide, significantly exceeding the sales figures of the original game Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
