Sonja Draksler

Sonja Draksler , also Sonja Radda-Draksler , (* January 5, 1927 in Dol near Hrastnika , then Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † January 29, 2016 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee , Carinthia ) was an Austrian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano / alto ) of Yugoslav origin.

Life

Sonja Draksler, born in what is now Slovenia , completed her vocal studies at the Ljubljana Music Academy . Her career as a singer began in 1947 as a soloist on the Slovenian radio with Radio Ljubljana. In the 1948/49 concert season she appeared as a soloist with the Slovenian National Philharmonic in Ljubljana. In 1951 she made her debut as an opera singer at the Ljubljana National Opera .

In 1955 she was engaged at the Vienna Volksoper , where she made her house debut as Fenena in the Verdi opera Nabucco . She was a permanent member of the Vienna Volksoper until the end of her career in the 1970s. Her main roles included u. a. the title role in Carmen , Azucena in Il Trovatore , Maddalena in Rigoletto , the witch in Rusalka , Magdalena in Der Evangelimann , Brigitta in Die tote Stadt and, in the field of operetta , the gypsy woman Czipra in Der Zigeunerbaron . In the 1956/57 season she took on the role of the woman forester in the Austrian premiere of the opera The clever little fox at the Vienna Volksoper . Between 1968 and 1973 she sang various medium and small parts in a total of 15 performances at the Vienna State Opera . In the 1958/59 season, as a partner of Mimi Coertse , she took over Nancy in the premiere of the comic opera Martha in the Redoutensaal in Vienna at the opening of the season . In the 1962/63 season she sang Suzuki in a German-language Madame Butterfly new production at the Vienna Volksoper with “splendid alto” .

Draksler was a guest at the Salzburg Festival (August 1957, as the 2nd maid in Elektra ), at the Bregenz Festival (1958 as Kathinka in The Bartered Bride , 1960 as Bostana in The Barber of Baghdad ) and from 1963 to 1966 at the Festival in Aix- en-Provence ; there she sang the nymph Dryad in Ariadne auf Naxos and the Third Lady in Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte . Draksler also had an important career as a concert singer.

Various audio documents have been preserved from Sonja Draksler. Several recordings, mostly operatic cross-sections, were released on LP on the Eurodisc label . a. Carmen , Hoffmann's stories (as Niklaus and the mother's voice), The Troubadour and Rigoletto . On Cetra she can be heard in a live recording of the Salzburger Elektra performance of 1957. In addition, a cross-section of the operetta Countess Mariza appeared in the series “Golden Operetta” on Telefunken , in which she sings the little part of the gypsy Manja.

Sonja Draksler was awarded the title “Austrian Chamber Singer ” in recognition of her artistic merits . In 1973 Draksler said goodbye to the opera stage. Since then she has lived in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, where she died in January 2016 at the age of 89. Draksler was with the doctor Dr. Heinrich Radda married. The marriage resulted in two children (a son, a daughter).
