Sonja's Return is a Swiss feature film that was produced for Swiss television .
Plot (summary)
Sonja Knecht (Melanie Winiger) was sentenced to six years in prison for the alleged murder of her husband. The first scene of the television film shows how she removes the pictures of her son from the pin board in her cell and the conversation with the principal and her probation officer on the occasion of her parole. Sonja travels to her home village and finds accommodation in a room at her mother's place of work. The 28-year-old wants to see her son again first, watches him unrecognized in the school yard and learns through his mouth: "Mys Mami isch tot" ( My mother is dead ) after schoolchildren teased him about his 'prison mother'. Contact is forbidden for the time being; Tim lives with her parents-in-law, to whom Sonja entrusted her then two-year-old son, but who made Tim believe that his mother was dead. Armin and Julia Berger send Sonja away after a conversation, and Armin applies for definitive custody of Sonja's son. Then she secretly contacts Tim without him finding out that the nice woman is his mother. When Sonja reveals himself to him as his mommy , Tim is completely disturbed. Armin succeeds in having his daughter-in-law move into an open living group because of a violation of the probation conditions. In order to obtain custody of her son, the young mother contacts Stefan, the only witness from the night of the murder, and asks him to finally admit the truth that she is innocent ... With that, the story takes a new turn, and Sonja has to face the shadow of her past.

“With Sonja's return, Swiss television has succeeded in creating a touching, lively melodrama that is deeply rooted in the Swiss Mittelland mentality and which delighted over 600,000 viewers on a Sunday evening. Both the scriptwriter Dave Tucker and the young production company HesseGreutert were able to realize their first feature film with this project, while director Tobias Ineichen has already made a name for himself as a Lüthi and Blanc director, with the SF film Dilemma and the Snow Drift scene. Cinematographer Felix von Muralt, on the other hand, is a photography professional who has also just presented his first directorial work with the short film Visite médicale. Above all, Melanie Winiger was able to prove that she is not only beautiful, but also has a lot to offer as an actor. The year 2006 could easily be declared the Melanie Winiger year. "
