Sherman Kenneth "Sonny" Gandee (born February 27, 1929 in Akron , Ohio , USA ; † July 21, 2013 in Grosse Ile , Michigan ) was an American football player in the National Football League (NFL). He played with the Detroit Lions , among others .

Player career

Sonny Gandee studied from 1948 to 1951 at Ohio State University for their football team, the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he played as a defensive end . In 1950, Gandee won the Rose Bowl with his team . After the 1951 season, Gandee played in the Senior Bowl in 1952 . In this game, the best college football players in the north of the United States competed against the best in the south.

1952 Gandee was by the Detroit Lions in the ninth round to 106 point drafted and then immediately released to the newly founded Dallas Texans. During the season Gandee moved back to Detroit and played with Yale Lary and Jack Christiansen as the defensive end in the team's defense . In the same year he and his team won the NFL championship game against the Cleveland Browns 17: 7. The following year the Lions were able to defend their title and again won the NFL final against the Browns 17:16. In 1956, Gandee moved to the position of linebacker . After 53 games in the NFL, he ended his career after this season.

After the career

Immediately after his career, Sonny Gandee ran a restaurant, after which he worked in the automotive industry . In 1966 he was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame . After retiring, he lived in Naples , Florida until 2008 and then moved to Gibraltar . His first wife died in 2008. With her he had a daughter and a son. Sonny Gandee, who remarried after the death of his first wife, died on July 21, 2013.
