Sonoita AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Arizona recognized since October 26, 1984 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives .

The American Viticultural Area Sonoita is located in southeast Arizona , south of the metropolitan area of Tucson . The cultivation area is surrounded by the Huachuca Mountains , Santa Rita Mountains and Whetstone Mountains . The vineyards are located at an altitude of 1400 to 1500 m and are among the highest on the North American continent. The area is sparsely populated. The largest town is Patagonia (approx. 900 inhabitants) on Sonoita Creek. The soil is an alluvial cone made of gravelly loam , which has good water retention capacity.
