The mescal bean ( Calia secundiflora (Ortega) Yakovlev , syn .: Sophora secundiflora ( Ortega ) Lag. Ex DC. , Broussonetia secundiflora Ortega ), also called Frijolillo, Colorines or red mescal bean, is a plant species in the subfamily of the butterfly family (Faboideae).
Description and ecology
Vegetative characteristics
The mescal bean grows as an evergreen, hardy , small tree or shrub and reaches heights of up to 6, up to 10 meters. The opposite constantly arranged, odd pinnate leaves contain 5 to 13 leathery pinna leaflet containing 3 to 5 cm long and about 2 to 2.8 cm are wide.
Generative characteristics
The racemose inflorescences are 5 to 12 cm long. The blue-violet, fragrant flowers are five-fold, hermaphrodite and zygomorphic . The five green sepals are fused together like a bell.
The brown, hairy, hard and woody legume is 2.5 to 12.5 cm long and contains one to eight red seeds. The fruits are only eaten by a few animals.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
Occurrence
The mescal bean is common in the southern US states of Texas , New Mexico, and Mexico . It thrives in the Texas savannah , steppe bush and chaparral .
ingredients
The seeds and leaves of the psychoactive plant contain cytisine , anagyrin, and sparteine .
Legal position
In Germany, the mescal bean is not subject to the BtMG .
