history

The savings institution in Wismar was founded on June 23, 1824 as the first communal savings bank in Mecklenburg. About ten years later, another savings bank was founded in Rhena on April 11, 1834. In 1877 there was a grand-ducal approval for a savings bank in Neukloster . It was not until November 5, 1886, after fierce opposition that the city council of Grevesmühlen decided to found a savings institution. On October 1, 1910, the "Landessparkasse für den Fürstentum Ratzeburg zu Schönberg" was founded for the locality of Schönberg and the Ratzeburg region . On July 1, 1918, the last savings bank was founded in Gadebusch in the Northwest Mecklenburg region.

After ten years and a month, the Sparkasse in Gadebusch moved into its new office, which is still used as an office today. After the Second World War, the savings banks had to cease their activities for the time being, but were able to resume on May 22, 1945. The savings banks ran their business completely again in 1946.

At the beginning of 1950, the Kreissparkasse Wismar , which was founded in April 1946 and was based in Sternberg , merged with the Stadtsparkasse Wismar to form the district and Stadtsparkasse Wismar. The Kreissparkasse Schönberg had joined the savings institution Grevesmühlen and Sparkasse Rhena in 1946. These relocated to Grevesmühlen on March 20, 1950 and became Kreissparkasse Grevesmühlen on September 18, 1950. The savings bank based in Gadebusch was connected to the Kreis and Stadtsparkasse Schwerin . In 1952 there was an administrative reform, which led to the fact that the district and city savings bank Wismar were divided into the district and city savings bank Sternberg and city and district savings bank Wismar. The Rhena main branch of the Kreissparkasse Grevesmühlen was connected to the Kreissparkasse Gadebusch in the same year.

In 1970 EDP computing technology found its way into the savings bank. As a result of the district reform in 1994, the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Nordwest was founded, which arose from the savings banks in Gadebusch , Grevesmühlen and Wismar . The resulting business area covered the district of Northwest Mecklenburg and the Hanseatic city of Wismar. On October 11, 1996, the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Nordwest took over the office in Warin with customers and employees from Sparkasse Parchim-Lübz .
