The Speltbach is a main stream almost 7 km long in Hohenlohekreis in northern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the middle Jagst from the left and west in Mulfingen - Berndshofen .

geography

course

The Speltbach arises from two branches of the same name, which unite later, on the narrow strip of plateau between the middle Kocher and Jagst valley east and northeast of Künzelsau. However, the main strand of the small water system begins at the source of the longer left source brook Siedelbach to the southern and left upper reaches, which is a dirt road ditch at about 437  m above sea level. NN between the Künzelsau places Mäusdorf and Nitzenhausen emerges, soon to run in a long right- hand bend towards the Künzelsau hamlet of Berndhausen , at the end of which the settlement lies in an already noticeably deepened valley. In the village, the longer Siedelbach converges with the southern Speltbach -Quellbach, which comes in a shorter course from Mettelholz in the east.

Now after this Speltbach called crosses in Berndshausen for the first and only time before the similarly worded Mündungsort Bernd Hofen a road the waters K 2303 of Amrichshausen to Buchenbach , because that now northward current Valley digs soon steeply to the forest blade Spelled one in which the stream is only accompanied by a farm road. From secondary blades it experiences two inflows here, in order to then unite with its left upper course on the border to the municipality of Mulfingen .

This shorter source branch from the north arises near the Mulfinger Unteren Railhof and drains a larger forest area in the Grund and Holderbach waters to the west of it in a rather consistent southern course . Two secondary blades also flow to this smaller Speltbach branch from the right on the second half of its course.

From the confluence, the combined Speltbach then runs eastwards in the downward branch of the Ts of its steep valley blades. Remaining in the forest for the first half of this lower course, the valley widens noticeably and the stream enters the open corridor below the southern slope of the Weingartsteige , which is structured by stone bars, on the left side of the valley, accompanied by a wood gallery. After a last kilometer run, it reaches the local border of the Mulfinger Mündungsweiler Berndshofen , where it is crossed by the Jagsttalstraße L 1025, which runs here on the left side of the river, and immediately afterwards the Speltbach flows from the left and west at less than 270  m above sea level. NN into the middle Jagst running north here .

Catchment area

The Speltbach has a catchment area of 11.2 km². The contour roughly forms a rectangle parallel to the cardinal points with a north-south extension of 4.5 km and a west-east extension of 2.5 km. The highest point in it is the Hohe Lindle in the southeast at 447  m above sea level. NN near the Siedelbach origin. The slightly undulating plateau, which takes up over three quarters of the catchment area, is mostly over 400  m above sea level. NN .

The watershed in the east runs against the Jagst tributary Buchenbach , which flows into the Mulfingen valley town of the same name ; the southern one to the Kocherstettener Kocher tributary Heiligenbach and to the Kocher itself; the western one to the Deubach, which flows further down at Nagelsberg into the Kocher, with its tributaries in the earsbach , Steinbach and Österbach one after the other . In the north-west a very short border separates the catchment area of the trout stream , which in turn reaches the Jagst at Dörzbach - Hohebach ; in the north runs across the Hetzlesbach to the Jagst in the little downward Heimhausen .

NN , immediately after the return of the left Mühlkanal of the Jagst from Buchenbach . From the confluence of its two upper courses of the same name, the stream has a length of 2.7 km, from the source of its longer right upper course a length of 5.9 km, the longest flow section in the stream system begins at the source of its left inlet Siedelbach and measures 6.9 km. The catchment area covers a total of 11.2 km².

Localities

The only places on the run are the Künzelsau hamlet of Berndshausen on the right-hand source stream running northwards and the Mulfingen hamlet of Berndshofen at the mouth.

Share in the catchment area of 11.2 km²:

  • the city of Künzelsau with about 7 km². In addition to Berndshausen, the Kügelhof is located on the southern watershed in its sub-area; the hamlet of Wolfsölden in the corner above the right source stream running northwards and the lower course running westwards; the hamlet of Büttelbronn to the west above the confluence of the source streams. To the northwest of it there used to be a place called Holderbach at the side stream of the same name and on the edge of the forest area of the same name, which has now disappeared.
  • the municipality of Mulfingen with about 3.5 km² in the northeast, mainly east of the left source stream running southwards and on both sides of the lower reaches. In their sub-area, apart from Berndshofen, the Untere Railhof lies to the east above the upper (!) Left upper course and the Untere Railhof to the northeast above the confluence of the source streams.
  • the city of Ingelfingen with about 0.7 km². Its completely uninhabited sub-area is located west of the left-hand source stream running southwards and consists almost entirely of the forest area of the Grund and Holderbach basin around the tributary of the same name.

geology

On the plateau, which takes up a large part of the catchment area, in the central part of the Lower Keuper is found , where loess sediments of Quaternary origin often lie in an arc from east to south to northwest on the ridges near the watershed . The spring branches and large tributaries usually arise in the border area of these two layers. The larger left upper course Siedelbach of the southern Quellbach then reaches the Upper Muschelkalk in the valley approximately at the inlet of the Hinterer Brünnlein , the Speltbachzweig coming from the north at its blade entrance. Only shortly before Berndshofen does the combined Speltbach on the Unterlauf reach the Middle , and at the very last on the edge of the Jagsttalaue in the hamlet the Lower Muschelkalk , into which it also flows.

Kügelhofer Moortopf (2013)

On the plateau in the catchment area there are two larger sinkholes showing the karst formation of the Upper Muschelkalk.

  • On the upward spur of the mouth of the Speltbach, southwest of Berndshofen, in the Galgenfeld not far from the Mulfinger Bodenhof, there is a moderately preserved elongated sinkhole about 4 m deep in the border area of the Unterseuper to the Upper Muschelkalk, into which the ditch of a dirt road drains.
  • The poorly preserved Kügelhofer Moortopf lies east of the Künzelsau Kügelhof in the Gewann Vorderes Seeholz still in the Unterkeuper, has a diameter of about 40 m, is sealed with washed-in clay - what one would call a Hülbe on the Swabian Alb - and silted up.
  • Not far from the second there is another sinkhole almost directly on the Siedelsbachlauf.

landscape

The Speltbach runs through part of the strip of plateaus between the neighboring rivers Kocher and Jagst, which is part of the Kocher-Jagst plains natural area . This plateau in the catchment area is slightly wavy and is mainly located in an open corridor, in which some forest islands are interspersed. It is mainly used for arable farming, but grassland predominates in the upper valley hollows. West of the upper left course of the Speltbach there is a larger closed forest area in the Grund and the Holderbach up to the watershed and beyond.

The steeply indented and sloping valley sections from the Kingen entrance down to about half of the eastward lower reaches are mostly covered by hillside and valley forest, downwards open land begins again. Especially on the left slope there is an old wine-growing area with many hedge-covered stone bars.

Protected areas

The lower course of the Speltbach and the blade sections of its two upper courses and its tributaries are part of the Jagsttal landscape protection area with side valleys… . They show a diverse historical cultural landscape composed of forest and open fields with watercourses and blades, stone bars, field trees, rain and embankments, orchards and extensively cultivated grassland in the valley.

Particularly protected biotopes are among others

  • natural stream sections at the beginning surrounded by wood in the middle of a field, Hinteren Brünnlein and at the uppermost westward course of the right Speltbach towards Berndhausen
  • a valley section with stone bars and field trees from Berndshausen down to the beginning of the wooded blade Spelt des Bach
  • the wood surrounding the pond in the northwest of Büttelbronn
  • Ponds, a pond and a spring forest in the forest area Grund west of the left Speltbach upper course
  • the stream of Speltbach and tributaries in the blade sections as well as on the lower course
  • an extensive stone bar landscape predominantly, but not only, on the left slope of the Unterlauf above the Weingartsteige of the road from Berndshofen to the Railhöfen, which shows old viticulture on this southern slope
  • the two large sinkholes mentioned under → Geology .

history

Probably from the Stone Age, but certainly in the Celtic times, there was an approximately 50 km long high-altitude path on the narrow plateau between Kocher and Jagst, which continues to the confluence of the two rivers in the Neckar near Bad Friedrichshall , which was used until modern times , the Hohe Straße between Kocher and Jagst . The so-called path climbed from a Jagstübergang at Heimhausen in Mulfingen through the edge of the neighboring Hetzlesbach stream to the north and up to the plateau and then initially ran along the northern watershed of the Speltbach stream. A branch from the path ran to the south-east on the river watershed of the two neighboring rivers, which were also very close above, in the direction of Kirchberg an der Jagst , for which he had to move south in front of the steep Speltbach cut, a hilltop-gable road between Ohrbach, Büttelborn and Berndshausen attests to the old route .
