Split Mirrors is a German synth-pop group from Münster in Westphalia , which was founded in 1985 and became internationally known through songs such as The Right Time and Voices .
history
Beginnings
At a meeting in a rehearsal room in Münster, Achim Jaspert and Andy Cay founded Split Mirrors in 1985. Jaspert brought drumming experience from a stay in India. Cay has already worked as a singer in the USA. Peter Delain completed the band as a keyboardist. They wrote their first songs and recorded EPs called "The Right Time" and "Voices". After the debut single "The Right Time" they performed at home and abroad. The album "1999" followed in 1993.
Studio and technology
They set up their own recording studio so that they could work at any time. A soundproof room enabled the interference-free recording of analog sound sources, such as B. vocals and saxophone. The synthesizers of that time already had a MIDI interface. These were networked with computers of the Atari ST series, which also had it. Now the melodies that had previously only existed live could be recorded and edited digitally. Since SMPTE made it possible to link the vocals or other analogue sources with MIDI instruments, this made it possible to edit and program the digital components. The Atari Falcon allowed with its DSP chip by hard disk recording and editing the analog sound sources. With the effects of the digital revolution in music, techniques from professional studios became available to them too.
Cooperation with people from Münster
Many artists from the Münster scene made their music there and were able to record it, such as B. WestBam , Frank Mertens von Alphaville , Dr. Ring-Ding , Hans Martin Stier , Bawa Abudu, Ulrich Hesselkamp, Doc Heyne and Simon Cay. Musicians of different styles such as jazz , rock , reggae , jungle , synthpop and hit music met each other. Some also took part in songs from Split Mirrors.
Work for others
Working with other artists became one of her main occupations. They composed, wrote texts or produced for Marani, Mike Bauhaus, Andreas Martin and Wolfgang Petry , among others . For Audiosmog , a four-member German rock band, they produced together with the then VIVA presenter Tobias Schlegl as a guest singer. In 2001 they recorded a cover version of the track Daylight in Your Eyes by the No Angels , which moved up to number 36 on the media control charts. This was followed by the single When Will I Be Famous (originally by Bros ) and the album Top of the Rocks , which only contained cover versions of well-known hits.
Remix your own songs
A series of remixes of the old Split Mirrors titles began. The new versions of the songs were released as EPs, including "1999 Freestyle" and "Voices Freestyle". With the new band member Henry Flex as keyboard player, the album "In London" was created in early 2007, the first release of which was from the EP "Split Mirrors Freestyle Remixes".
In January 2011 they released the album "From The Beginning". The album mainly contains previously unreleased songs from the early years in the style of that time. Furthermore, there are some new songs on the album, in which the Chinese singer Fan Jiang also participated.
Modern remixes
Taking up elements of Electro House / Deep House , the 80s Synthypop tracks "The Right Time" and "Voices" were remixed in cooperation with international DJs.
Other artists had their titles reissued in this style, DJ Adam van Hammer and the singer Kitsu with the songs "Like Ice In The Sunshine" and "Dolce Vita", the band Bad Boys Blue with "You're a Woman" and the Singer Fancy with the song "Slice Me Nice".
In December 2016, DJ Adamski, Henry Flex and Achim Jaspert released “Dr. Rave - It's Time to Rave - Again! ", Official anthem for the event" 90s Rave Berlin "2017.
Another official reissue of an 80s cult hit followed in 2017. ( Hypnotic Tango , by My Mine 1984) Subsequently, Split Mirrors produced Adam van Hammer feat. Valerie " Self Control "
On October 27, 2017, Henry Flex and Achim Jaspert released "Split Mirrors & Friends" with hits from Camouflage, Fancy and Bad Boys Blue as well as some of their own songs in the Italo Disco / Discofox sound.
