Sports Car Classic
The Sports Car Classic is a sports car race on the Raceway at Belle Isle in Detroit , Michigan in the United States . The race, which is currently being held as the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic presented by the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers due to sponsorship agreements , is currently on the United SportsCar Championship's racing calendar . It takes place as a frame race of the Detroit Grand Prix .
history
At the time of the Formula 1 and CART races in Detroit from 1984 to 2001, the supporting program included a Trans-Am series race every year . After the IndyCar Series revived the Detroit Grand Prix in 2007, the sports cars came to Detroit. The American Le Mans Series drove a 2:45 hour each in 2007 and 2008 , whereby in both years the overall victory did not go to a top-class LMP1 vehicle, but rather an LMP2 vehicle. This was mainly due to the very tight track layout in those years, which the more agile, smaller prototypes suited.
Since the Detroit Grand Prix was no longer held from 2009, the American Le Mans Series could no longer compete in Detroit. It wasn't until 2012 that races were held on Belle Isle again, but this time the Rolex Sports Car Series was part of the supporting program. In 2012 and 2013 the series drove a 2-hour race each. In the second year there was a switch to the faster track layout from the times of the CART championship.
Since the Grand-Am merged with the ALMS in 2014 to form the United SportsCar Championship , the new series started next year. The race distance was shortened to 1:40 hours and of the four classes in the series only the Prototype Class and the GT Daytona Class competed .
