description

Sprinkle chess flowers are perennial herbaceous plants that reach heights between 10 and 120 centimeters. The large onions of these geophytes consist of two to five large, tightly packed, fleshy, starchy onion scales. The speckled specimens have between 2 and 20 small scales, while the unspeckled specimens can have 50 or more.

The leaves are in 1 to 4 whorls of 2 to 8 individual leaves . They are arranged alternately and linear-lanceolate to ovate. Each leaf is between 4 and 16 inches long but is usually shorter than the inflorescence .

The hermaphroditic flowers nod and smell pleasant. They bloom from March to June. The six unwaxed, elongated to egg-shaped bracts are brownish-purple to pale yellow-green and either clearly speckled with yellow or purple or completely unspotted. They are between 1 and 4 centimeters long and not bent at the tip. Nectaries are at the base and are yellow with purple dots. They are about 1/2 to 2/3 as long as the tepals and lanceolate. The base of the six stamens is usually just above the approach of the anthers . The ovary is constantly above, the stylus is clearly divided to a third of its length.

The triple capsule fruits are clearly sixfold winged in the longitudinal direction and open lengthways. The flat, yellow-brown seeds are arranged in two rows per chamber.

The chromosome number is 2n = 24, 36, 48. It is known that F. affinis forms natural hybrids with the scarlet fritillary ( Fritillaria recurva ).

distribution

Speckled chess flowers thrive in oak or pine forests, or in grasslands at altitudes between 0 and 1800 meters above sea level.
