Sprinkles Cupcakes is a bakery originally founded in Beverly Hills , California . She is considered to be the first to specialize exclusively in making cupcakes . The bakery chain is known in the United States because the founder Candace Nelson is, among other things, a juror on the show Cupcake Wars . The bakery's customers also include numerous celebrities from film and television, some of whom have publicly expressed their preference for products from this bakery.

Company history

In 2002 Candace Nelson and her husband Charles Nelson, both bankers in California at the time, visited New York and tried the cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery there . At that time, Magnolia Bakery was already considered one of the origins of the cupcake trend that had been observable in New York since the late 1990s. The Magnolia Bakery and the cupcakes produced there first appeared briefly on July 9, 2000 in the episode Obstacle Course ( No Ifs, Ands, or Butts ) of the Sex and the City series . There is a scene of the two actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon , which shows them on a bench in front of Magnolia Bakery, Parker eating a cupcake. The scene is only 20 seconds long, but is considered to be the reason why the preference for cupcakes developed into a US-wide trend and ultimately also made the Magnolia Bakery known to a wide audience. The visit was the reason for Candace Nelson to specialize in making cupcakes. Nelson had taken a baking course and then tried to specialize in cakes for special occasions.

“I took orders for cakes for special occasions, but I realized very quickly that they were ordered for special and non-regular occasions. So I wanted to create an artisanal dessert that people can eat every day ... that tempted me to reinvent the actually simple cupcake. "

The Nelsons had a minimalist shop designed. The logo and packaging were designed by a former Martha Stewart employee with the help of graphic designers Kevin Hagen and David Irvin. On April 13, 2005, Nelsons Sprinkles opened its first store in Beverly Hills and was sold out after three hours. The Nelsons attach great importance to working exclusively with high-quality raw materials. The bakery's success is also due to Nelson finding customers among film and television celebrities very early on. Well-known clients include Oprah Winfrey , Barbra Streisand , Tyra Banks , Katie Holmes , Paris Hilton , Blake Lively , Ryan Seacrest and Tom Cruise . The contact with Oprah Winfrey came through Barbra Streisand, who was one of Sprinkles Cupcakes' first customers. She sent Winfrey a box of the cupcakes from that bakery. This led to an invitation to the program Breakfast with Oprah , where the presenter likes to present delicacies that she has found to be good. Appearance on the show resulted in sales of the Beverly Hills branch increasing by 50 percent. The bakery was selling 1,500 cupcakes a day at the time. Sprinkles Cupcakes have also been featured on other US-wide shows, including The Today Show and Nightline, and The Girls Next Door .

Sprinkles Cupcakes is also known for resolutely enforcing its trademark rights over other cupcake bakeries. The company conducted several lawsuits to prevent other bakeries from using the term sprinkles in their names, from using the shade of pink used in the company's shops and packaging, or from decorating with two different- sized fondant dots similar to sprinkles .

Branches and sales concepts

Sprinkles Cupcakes now has 17 branches in the United States. In addition to Beverly Hills, there are branches in Chicago, Dallas, Georgetown, Los Angeles, Houston, La Jolla, New York, Palo Alto, Scottsdale, Arizona, Las Vegas, Atlanta and Newport Beach. For a time, the owners planned to open 15 more branches and establish branches in London and Tokyo.

The Nelsons use innovative sales concepts. For example, they use machines in several places that dispense cupcakes for money or credit cards, and named these machines Cupcake ATM, based on the American name for ATMs . With a specially developed delivery van, you can load your machines with cupcakes as required. This vehicle was also named Sprinklesmobile with publicity . Since 2007 they have also been selling baking mixes in the USA and Canada.
