history

A parish was recorded in Villennes-sur-Seine as early as 1007 and the place consequently also had a church. The construction of the current church is dated to the early 12th century. The choir was destroyed during the Hundred Years War . Like the upper tower floor, it was then rebuilt.

Exterior construction

Bell tower

To the south of the west facade is the bell tower covered with a gable roof, the upper floor of which is pierced on all four sides by high, unadorned arched windows.

The middle of the west facade is occupied by a round arched portal, which is framed by archivolts and on each side by two columns decorated with capitals . The capitals are carved with owls and grimacing heads, which are entwined with palmettes and tendrils. A cornice with a roller frieze runs above the portal , above which a large window opens, which is framed by round bars and a zigzag band.

inner space

The three-aisled nave extends over four bays and ends in a right-angled choir in the east. The main nave, like the two side aisles , which are almost as high, has groin vaults , which are underpinned by strong belt arches . High arched arcades on rectangular supports reinforced with pillars structure the interior. The capitals are decorated with large, flat leaves. Some capitals with figurative scenes are dated to the late 11th century. One scene depicts a person lying under an arcade who is being attacked by a devil. Another scene shows a man between two lions.
