The Catholic Church of St. Ansgar was built between 1971 and 1973 in the northeast of Wolfenbüttel (Waldenburger Straße 1A). It belongs to the parish of St. Petrus , its namesake is Saint Ansgar of Bremen .

history

Since 1950, new building areas have been advertised in the northeast of the Wolfenbüttel urban area. In this new district, which is directly adjacent to the so-called Juliusstadt, more and more refugees and displaced persons from Catholic areas settled. In 1955, a church building plot was purchased on Fichtendamm, which was exchanged for today's church plot in 1965. From 1963 a Catholic parish was formed, it initially belonged to the parish of St. Peter . In 1964 a parish vicarie was set up, to which at that time about 2000 Catholics belonged. Your priest lived in an apartment at Tannenweg 1a.

The St. Ansgar day care center (Waldenburger Straße 1) , which is now located next to the church, was opened as early as 1966 . At that time, Catholic services were already taking place in the auditorium of the elementary school on Geitelplatz. In 1967 the parish hall was built.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built according to the plans of the architects Eberhard M. Kleffner ( Essen ) and Alfred Geismar ( Braunschweig ) and is about 112 meters above sea level . The overall concept is designed as a square central building.

The furnishings were designed by the sculptor Josef Baron . The window glazing is based on a design by the artist Annette Herzen-Kleffner .
