The St. Johannes Church in Schaprode is the Protestant parish church of the Schaprode parish in the western part of Rügen . It is the third oldest church on the island of Rügen.

history

The church was built at the beginning of the 13th century and played an important role in the Christianization of Rügen. It is one of the oldest churches on Rügen, alongside those in Bergen, Altenkirchen and Sagard. Various Danish bishops sought asylum here in disputes with the royal family. Until the Reformation, Rügen belonged to the Danish diocese of Roskilde. The originally Romanesque architectural style of the churches, such as the St. John's Church in Schaprode, was brought to the island by Danish builders. Around 1450, the Romanesque nave (parish hall) was replaced and reduced in size by a Gothic one . The Romanesque choir with the apse and parts of the east wall of the once three-aisled nave have been preserved from the old church .

At the end of the 15th century the church was the destination of a pilgrimage to Mary. The triumphal cross comes from this time.

The sacristy dates from the 16th century. The two church bells were cast in Stralsund in 1609 and 1728 . From 1666 to 1668, the Schaprod church received the wooden roof tower over the west gable. The baroque patronage stalls of the church also date from the 17th century . The portraits of the reformers Johannes Bugenhagen and Martin Luther at the pulpit rise were painted in 1723. The three-storey altar is also a work from the 18th century.

Furnishing

The lower part of the altar consists of a brick table with a brownish limestone top. Above it is a baroque wooden top, which was created at the beginning of the 18th century by Thomas Phalert from Stralsund. Three panels can be seen in the center. In the middle main part the crucifixion, in the predella below the Lord's Supper and in the upper part the resurrection. The pictures are framed by winding columns and evangelist figures. The whole thing is crowned by a pelican sitting on its nest. He feeds the boys with blood from his chest. Underneath is a grimace as a symbol of evil. The altar table is surrounded at the front by barriers from the 18th century.

pulpit

pulpit

The baroque church pulpit was made by the carver Hans Broder and the painter Franz Rose from Stralsund between 1722 and 1723. The pulpit is carried by a carved statue of Peter. On the pulpit there are pictures with inscriptions depicting the Old Testament. At the entrance are pictures of the Christianization of Rügen and the Reformation of Pomerania. The door to the pulpit is decorated with a golden inscription: Say what is to be said, with real courage, you will lead your office and Christ teaches gud . The pulpit is covered with decorations made of pieces of fruit, acanthus leaves, angel heads and leaf hangings. The lectern rests on a carved eagle. On the cover is an angel with an open book, under the cover there is a free-floating dove.

confessional

The confessional is on the southeast side of the choir. This, like the pulpit, was also created by the masters Broder and Rose. It is decorated with rich baroque carving of putti and leaves. Several, also naive, oil paintings in the grid panels decorate the confessional.

This elaborately crafted wooden stand was created in 1723 together with the pulpit. The baptism of Jesus is shown in relief on the bell-shaped base. The baptism was completely restored in the 1990s.

Patronage Lodge

Opposite the confessional, the patron's box was built on the northeast side of the choir. On the outer wall are the coats of arms of the noble families who used to live here, such as von Sidow , von Usedom , von Bohlen , and von Platen . A sacrament house with an ornamental gable on the side forms the conclusion. It was accessible from the box. A statue of Mary was kept here until the end of the 19th century. Allegedly, this was the goal of pilgrims before the Reformation.

Triumphal Cross Group

The late Gothic triumphal cross group comes from the 15th century, in the 18th century it was given a new color . It hangs under the triumphal arch between the nave and the choir. Mary and John flank the crucified Jesus. The symbols of the four evangelists are depicted in the reliefs at the ends of the cross.
