St. John's Church (Wolfenbüttel)
The Church of St. Johannis - the patron saint is John the Baptist - is a church in the west of the city of Wolfenbüttel (Augustusstadt), whose congregation belongs to the Wolfenbüttel provost in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig .
history
St. Johannis was built as a three-aisled half-timbered building on a broken stone base with a gable roof. A special feature is the massive western front with corner blocks. The basement with a cross vault and arched entrance was designed as a morgue .
After two years of construction (construction started in 1661), the church was consecrated on December 13, 1663 in the presence of August the Younger of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel by Brandanus Daetrius , court preacher and abbot of Riddagshausen monastery .
The original church tower turned out to be unstable and was therefore torn down around 1690. As a replacement, a free-standing massive bell tower was built in 1693 according to the design of the master builder Johann Balthasar Lauterbach .
In 1960 the church was extensively restored.
Furnishing
The building historian August Fink characterizes the Johanniskirche as a “precious jewel of Protestant church architecture”.
The medallions of August the Younger and his wife Sophie Elisabeth hang in the choir.
The exhibits altar , pulpit (with pulpit clock ), baptismal font and organ prospect come from the castle chapel of the once impressive and later ruined princely seat of Hesse Castle .
The grave slabs of the master builder Hermann Korb - died 1735 - and the composer Johann Rosenmüller - died 1684 - are attached to the walls .
organ
The case of the organ in St. Johannis dates from 1593 by David Beck and, like the altarpiece , the pulpit and the baptismal font , was donated by Duke August .
The organ was created in 1971 in the workshop of the organ building company Paul Ott (Göttingen). The slider chests -instrument has 22 registers on two manuals and pedal . The disposition is:

Bells
Immediately after the church was built, the church received a wooden belfry , which was fitted with three bells in the years 1663–1676 . The first bell was made by casting around a bell that had previously hung in the Clus monastery near Bad Gandersheim ; it weighed approx. 700 kg and had to be given as a metal donation by the German people for armament purposes during the First World War , just like the (third) bell that was purchased in 1676.
The middle bell from 1672 was preserved. It was manufactured in the Heiso Meyer foundry , weighs 650 kg (strike tone g 1 ) and has the inscription “If you now want to live a blissful life, God is ready for the same to give to you. "
To replace the two melted down bells, two new bells were purchased in 1961, which were cast by the Rincker foundry (Sinn, Dillkreis). The big bell (No. 1) with a weight of 1,100 kg (strike note e 1 ) has the inscription “Christ has taken power away from death. The dead of wars ”. The small bell (No. 3) weighs 550 kg (strike note a 1 ) has the inscription “Land, Land, hear the Lord's word!”.
