The St. Laurentius Church is a Catholic church in Nussloch in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built in 1755/56 according to plans by Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti and expanded in 1897.

history

Nussloch was first mentioned in a document in 766 in the Lorsch Codex . It is not known since when there was a church in Nussloch. The Worms Synodale , a visitation report of the parishes in the diocese of Worms , mentions the church patronage of St. Laurentius for the first time in 1496 . The patronage could be connected with the Lorsch daughter monasteries on the Heiligenberg , then it would go back to the 11th century.

After Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation in the Palatinate in 1556 , Nussloch also had to follow the multiple changes of denomination. When the Palatinate church was divided in 1707, the church was assigned to the Catholics and a Catholic parish was set up again in Nussloch. In 1756 the dilapidated church was replaced by a new building. The plans were drawn up by the builder Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti from the Electoral Palatinate . At the end of the 19th century the church had become too small for the increased population, which is why the polygonal choir was torn down between 1895 and 1897 and the church was expanded with a transept and a new choir. In 1988 the church was restored. The parish of St. Laurentius, together with Leimen and Sandhausen, has been part of a pastoral care unit in the Wiesloch dean's office in the Archdiocese of Freiburg since 2011 .

description

The St. Laurentius Church is located in the historic center of Nussloch on the main street. The neo-baroque transept from 1897, covered with hipped roofs, harmoniously adjoins the baroque nave in the west . The tower with its onion dome is placed on the left. Above the old main portal, which is now walled up, there is a statue of the church patron St. Laurentius in a figure niche. Several tombstones of the Bettendorff family have been placed outside from the previous church. The oldest is from the 15th century.

The original high altar , the side altars and the baroque pulpit have been preserved . Scenes from the Bible are depicted in four ceiling paintings.

organ

The organ on the gallery was installed in 1987 by Karl Göckel in the historic case by Heinrich Voit from 1878, whereby some old pipes were still used. The instrument has 26 stops on two manuals and a pedal and has mechanical performance and electrical stop action .
