The Church of St. Anna is the Catholic church in Stendal , the district town of the district of the same name in Saxony-Anhalt . The church named after St. Anna , the mother of Mary , is located at the Mönchskirchhof. It is the seat of the parish “St. Anna ”and the seat of the Stendal deanery , which is the northernmost in the Magdeburg diocese and the largest deanery in Germany in terms of area .

history

The church was presumably consecrated in 1461 and a Franciscan convent founded in the 15th century belonged to it . The Reformation was introduced in Stendal around 1540 and the monastery was dissolved.

Around 1700 Catholics came to Stendal again. These were soldiers for whom, from 1739 onwards, Stendal's catholic services were held in various secular rooms by clergymen from the Benedictine monastery Ammensleben . From 1784 the church “St. Anna ”. After the secularization of the Ammensleben monastery in 1804, Benediktus Greb, one of the Benedictine fathers from Ammensleben, settled in Stendal as a pastor and the parish of Stendal was founded. In 1907 the church was bought by the Catholic community. After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Stendal increased due to the influx of refugees and expellees from the eastern regions of the German Empire . From 1967 to 1975 Leo Nowak , who later became bishop of the Magdeburg diocese, was vicar at “St. Anna ”. In 1973 the church was ravaged by a fire in which the roof with the then still existing roof turret and the organ were destroyed. During the time of reunification , contacts arose with the St. Bernward community in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony .

The single-nave brick church, now without a tower, was built in the late Gothic style.

Today's organ was installed in summer 2014. The instrument has 21 registers and 1068 pipes . It was built in 1870 by Thomas Joseph Frederick Robson for St. Andrews Church in Hastings , England . As a result of the demolition of this church in 1970, it was moved to a church in Prestbury, after which it was acquired in 2010 by the Dutch organ restorer Fokke-Rinke Feenstra ( Grootegast ) and restored and rebuilt in 2014 for the Stendal Church. It was consecrated in Stendal on October 12, 2014 by Bishop Gerhard Feige .
