With the introduction of the Reformation , the region became Protestant. With the construction of the iron works Eisenwerke Tangerhütte , near the river Tanger and the village of Vaethen, which took place from 1842 to 1845 , a large number of workers moved to the previously predominantly agricultural village of Vaethen, which was transformed into an industrial location. In 1928 the village got its current name Tangerhütte and in 1935 town charter .

On December 2, 1906, Dechant Simon from Stendal celebrated the first Holy Mass in a private house, and from November 1907 Catholic Sunday services were held every two weeks in the attic of another private house.

The church was built in 1931, the 700th anniversary of the death of St. Elisabeth. At that time around 100 Catholics lived in Tangerhütte and another 60 in the surrounding villages. Construction began in spring, and on August 2, 1931, dean Karl Platt from Stendal laid the foundation stone . The Church was consecrated on December 13, 1931 .

In 1944/1945 the number of parishioners increased to almost 2,000 due to the influx of evacuees from the Lower Rhine and the eastern regions of the German Reich . 1946 settled with the 1932 in Breslau ordained priest Hartwig from Ziegenhals the first priest in Tangerhütte down and Tangerhuette was the seat of a curacy , which was raised in 1959 for independent Pfarrvikarie. On October 9, 1976, a new altar was consecrated by Bishop Johannes Braun . In 1981 parish vicar Helmut Ladewig, the last local clergyman, left Tangerhütte and moved to the Hl.-Geist-Kirche in Tröglitz .

On February 1, 2007, the community network Stendal - Bismark - Giesenslage - Goldbeck - Meßdorf - Osterburg - Seehausen - Tangerhütte was established, to which, in addition to the St. Elisabeth Church, the churches Heilig Kreuz in Bismark , Immaculate Conception in Giesenslage , St. Bernhard in Goldbeck , St. Mary of the Annunciation in Meßdorf , St. Joseph in Osterburg , St. Johannes Baptist in Seehausen and St. Anna in Stendal. On May 2, 2010, today's parish of St. Anna emerged from the community . The churches in Bismark, Giesenslage, Goldbeck and Messdorf have since been profaned . The 2011 census in the European Union showed that 191 of the 11,665 inhabitants of the municipality “Stadt Tangerhütte”, or around 1.6%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. The majority of the inhabitants did not belong to any religious community.

The last service took place in the church on November 16, 2019. What will happen to her after her profanation has not yet been determined. The Catholic parish will in future meet for parish afternoons in the rooms of the Protestant parish hall in Tangerhütte.
