St. Antonius is the Catholic parish church of Herten , Recklinghausen district . It was built from 1882 to 1885 according to plans by August Hanemann .

history

The small village church of the pre-industrial Herten in Vest Recklinghausen in the Electorate of Cologne remained Catholic during the Reformation . With the onset of coal mining in 1872, the village became an industrial town in just a few years and the Catholic parish grew many times over. The old and dilapidated church was torn down and replaced by the current building.

Since 2007 St. Antonius has been the main church of four former parishes in the city of Herten and, thanks to its central location, has the function of a city church .

architecture

The St. Anthony's Church is a neo-Gothic three-nave brick - Basilica . To the east of the five-bay nave are two choir bays with a polygonal end. Each nave yoke has a large window on both sides in the side wall and three small ones in the upper aisle . The square tower on the portal side, divided into three floors, has a high pointed helmet .

The sacristy on the south side of the choir was built in the 1970s. On its west corner is a sculpture of St. Sebastian by Karl-Heinz Klein .

The high altar of the church was in the St. Pankratius Church in Vorhelm until 1969 .
