St. Antonius is the Roman Catholic half-timbered chapel in the Röderhof district of the Diekholzen community .

history

Until the end of the 14th century, the Röderhof was a small rural settlement that was owned by the Knights of Rössing . These had temporarily leased their settlement to Hildesheim citizens, such as the Kramer and Gallen families . In 1397 the von Rössing family sold the settlement to the Carthusian monastery in Hildesheim. In addition to the property, the purchase contract also mentions the house of God, which was also transferred to the monastery with all rights. While this means that the chapel can be traced back to the year 1397, there is no information about its patronage . Since all rights of the chapel were mentioned in the document, this is probably a reference to the patronage rights of the von Rössing family . However, it seems doubtful that this family was entitled to a free and thus unrestricted right of patronage, since the Archdeacon of Detfurth reserved the consent of all clergymen almost exclusively. A priest cannot be proven for the 14th century. Due to its size, the small community hardly had parish rights. It is possible to receive the sacraments in the distant baptistery St. Gallus in Detfurth. After the Carthusian monastery became the owner of the settlement, all small-scale parcels were merged into a large farmyard. The chapel's patronage right belonged to the respective prior of the Charterhouse, who installed a priest of the Hildesheim religious order on the Röderhof.

The Röderhof was part of the Carthusian monastery. The visitation of the monastery in 1579 by episcopal councils had shown that apart from two lay brothers the entire religious community had remained Catholic, as well as the court and the church. This was due to the prior of the Charterhouse, who opposed the Reformation efforts in close cooperation with the diocese leadership .

During the Counter-Reformation in the Hildesheim Monastery, the Carthusian Order had succeeded in having a new chapel built on the Röderhof. The consecration took place on July 22, 1613 by Auxiliary Bishop Nikolaus von Arendsdorff . Saint Anthony of Padua was chosen as the patronage, who was a Christian model for the brothers through his advocacy for poverty.

At the end of the 18th century, the Carthusian monastery, by episcopal decree of August 4, 1777 and with the consent of Pope Pius VI. , canceled. During the Kulturkampf , the Antonius Chapel was temporarily used as a granary.

From 1959 to 2013 the chapel was mainly used for church services at the Röderhof youth center.

On November 4, 2013, Bishop Norbert Trelle issued a decree to the former abbot of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem , Benedikt Lindemann , for the establishment of the "Benedictine Community of St. Romuald" at the Röderhof, which has been using the Antonius Chapel since 2014 as a place of worship.
