Parish Church of St. Gallus

St. Gallus is a Roman Catholic parish church in the town of Detfurth in the city of Bad Salzdetfurth in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony . Your parish of the same name belongs to the Deanery Alfeld-Detfurth of the Diocese of Hildesheim .

history

The settlement of Dethmerode is mentioned in a document from archdeacon and cathedral provost Berthold in 1207 . This describes the Archidiakonat Detfurth with the settlements Bodenburg , Breinum , Heinde , Wehrstedt and Wesseln . The development of Detfurth on the old Völkerstraße is closely related to the foundation of the St. Gallus baptistery by the Bishop of Hildesheim . Whether the church was founded in the 9th century is uncertain, since their St. Gallus - patronage spread only in the 14th century in the Hildesheim region. In 1207 a pastor named Hermann is confirmed. The establishment of the archdeaconate is probably connected with the painting site where the goding of the district was held. Detfurth is mentioned in this context as early as 1194. There , 1232 representatives from all of Eastern Westphalia paid homage to the Hildesheim bishop. In 1282, Bishop Siegfried II transferred the baptismal church to the cathedral chapter . With this, the Capitulum ecclesiae Hildeshim also came into possession of the patronage rights. In the course of the ban reforms in the Hildesheim monastery , Detfurth was united with Alfeld . Ernst von Hagen appeared for the first time as archdeacon of Alfeld and Detfurth in 1308 . In the middle of the 15th century, the Holy Cross altar in the St. Gallus Church was endowed with a donation of 100 Rhenish guilders by the pastor Thidericus Vogel .

Detfurth belonged to the Marienburg office . After the Hildesheim collegiate feud (1519–1523), the office remained under episcopal influence, according to the provisions of the Quedlinburg recession. During the Thirty Years' War , however, a Lutheran preacher was able to settle in Detfurth in 1637 due to the close proximity to the reformed parishes of the Duchy of Braunschweig . In 1643 the restitution of the large monastery to the Hildesheim prince-bishop took place . As a result, Detfurth and Salzdetfurth came back under the supervision of the Prince-Bishop until the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. In view of the impending re-Catholicization , the Lutheran preacher was probably forced to give up the parish of St. Gallus. The Reformation of St. Gallus appears dubious because, in the long term, no Protestant parishes could develop in the episcopal office of Marienburg.

From an economic point of view, the agriculturally oriented Detfurth was soon overshadowed by the Protestant community of Salzdetfurth. As a Catholic bastion against Salzdetfurth, the Detfurtensis circle was founded in the 18th century with the communities Detfurth, Itzum , Söder , Westfeld , Groß and Klein Düngen .

Today's church was built from 1772 to 1779 for the dilapidated parish church. In 1925 Detfurth was still almost without exception Catholic with 97.2 percent of the total population. After the Second World War , only a few displaced persons and refugees came to the community, as many settled in Bad Salzdetfurth due to better job opportunities. St. Gallus took over the care of the Catholic Christians in the northern part of Bad Salzdetfurth.

On November 1st, 2014 the new parish of St. Gallus was founded in Bad Salzdetfurth. The branch churches of the Holy Family in Bad Salzdetfurth, St. Laurentius in Bodenburg, St. Cosmas and Damian in Groß Düngen, St. Bernward in Klein Düngen, St. Johannes Evangelist in Hockeln , St. Johannes Baptist in Wesseln belong to the Detfurther parish church of St. Gallus and Assumption of Mary in Westfeld.

inside view

The church, built from rubble stones between 1772 and 1779, replaced the dilapidated old church. The neo-Romanesque tower of the church, which is strikingly large for a place the size of Detfurth, was raised in 1899. The church has ten high arched windows, four of which have glass paintings. The interior of the church with three altars is kept in the classicism style. During the restoration of the church from 1983 to 1984, remains of the original painting were uncovered on the walls.
