St. Cosmas and Damian is the Catholic church of Groß Düngen , a district of Bad Salzdetfurth in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony . It is located at Hildesheimer Straße 25 and belongs to the parish of St. Gallus with its seat in Detfurth , in the Alfeld-Detfurth dean's office of the Hildesheim diocese .

history

The parish of Düngen and thus the existence of a predecessor of today's church was first documented in 1207. The location on the Heerstrasse from Hildesheim to Nordhausen (today B 243 ), the old affiliation to the Hildesheim Cathedral and the patronage of Saints Cosmas and Damian , secondary patrons of the cathedral, suggest that it was founded much earlier. Archdiakonatskirche was St. Gallus in Detfurth .

Due to severe structural damage, especially as a result of the Thirty Years War , the old church appeared irreparable at the beginning of the 18th century. Since April 1, 1940, the St. Bernward Chapel in Klein Düngen has also belonged to the parish of St. Cosmas and Damian , previously it belonged to the parish of St. Gallus in Detfurth. The most recent extensive renovations were carried out on the exterior in 1980/81 and on the interior in 1994/95.

Since December 1, 2002, the church has belonged to the then newly founded Deanery Alfeld-Detfurth, previously it belonged to the Deanery Bockenem-Detfurth. Since November 1, 2014, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Gallus , based in Detfurth.

St. Cosmas and Damian is an east-facing hall church with a three-eighth end and is around 86 meters above sea level . The exterior is structured with Gothic wall pillars. These, as well as the reveals of the windows, contrast stone-like with the white plastered wall surfaces. The massive square tower that forms the western end is also unplastered. He wears a remarkable double-curved hood . The bulk Düngener Barockkirche is the Regency style assigned.

Furnishing

The pulpit was made in 1758. The high altar with the statues of the two church patrons and the central image of the Coronation of the Virgin , as well as the side altar, came to Groß Düngen in 1804 from the Hildesheim Sültekloster, which was closed . They show forms of early classicism . The present organ , with two manuals over 18  stops , was installed in 2000. The organ building company Gebrüder Stockmann from Werl built it using parts of the previous instrument.

Pastor Joseph Müller

On August 1, 1943, Joseph Müller came to Groß Düngen as a pastor. Soon afterwards he was denounced, arrested by the Gestapo and executed on September 11, 1944 in the Brandenburg prison. A plaque commemorates him in St. Cosmas and Damian, and in Groß Düngen the parish hall, primary school and a street are named after him.
