General

Mützenich has always belonged to the parish of Konzen and never had its own church until the 19th century. In 1840 the residents of Mützenich applied to the Archbishop of Cologne to build their own chapel and to maintain their own clergy. The reason for the request was the long and arduous way to the parish church in Konzen. In 1843 the archbishop approved the request and a separate chapel could be built. On October 18, 1856 Mützenich was finally separated from the mother parish of Konzen and raised to an independent parish . Mützenich has belonged to the diocese of Aachen since 1930 , before it was part of the archbishopric of Cologne .

Building history

The old part of today's parish church was built between 1847 and 1848 in the neo-Gothic style. The consecration took place on August 24, 1850. Due to the increase in population, the parish church became too small in the 1950s and it was decided to expand the old church. The architects Herbert Pantke and Otto Hotzen from Bremen made the plans for this. Between 1954 and 1955, the three-aisled extension was built on the north side and the north wall of the old nave as well as the old choir and the sacristy were demolished. The solemn consecration took place on March 31, 1955.

Building description

The old building was originally a three-aisled hall church with a bell tower in front and a choir closed on five sides in the east. The bell tower and the south and west walls of the nave are preserved. Since the renovation in the 1950s, the old building has included the organ gallery and the new main entrance. The new part is a three-aisled quarry stone hall church in the modern round arch style. The semicircular choir area faces north.

Furnishing

There is modern equipment in the church. It is worth mentioning a figure of St. Bartholomew from the 14th century. The organ is the work of the Aachen organ builder Karl Kamp . It has an electric action and has 26 registers. The stained glass windows are works by Trude Dinnendahl-Benning from 1961.
