General

Imgenbroich always belonged to the parish of Konzen until the parish was elevated . Imgenbroich received its first chapel in 1675 at the instigation of Matthias Stolzen. During the French era , Imgenbroich was separated from Konzen in 1804 and made an independent parish . Since 1930 the place belongs to the diocese of Aachen , before the parish was part of the archbishopric of Cologne .

Building history

The first church was built in 1675. Around 1700 Winand Stolzen, a descendant of Matthias, had a hermitage added to the chapel, which was inhabited by a clergyman until 1751. Due to the good economic situation of the cloth factory, the population increased so much that the chapel soon became too small. A larger chapel was finally built between 1767 and 1768, which was elevated to parish church in 1804. It was a hall building in Baroque forms with a small bell tower in the shape of an onion dome . The old chapel was then converted into a residential building and burned down in 1881. In 1866, the now 100-year-old baroque church was again too small and also dilapidated, so that a new church was necessary again, for which collection had been made since 1860. Ultimately, however, it was not until 1898 that the new building could begin. In 1898 the new building plans of the Monschau building inspector Lürig were accepted by the authorities and the church was completed by 1899. A three-aisled church in the neo-Gothic style with a choir closed on three sides was created. The consecration took place on July 17, 1901. The old baroque church was demolished in 1899.

In the Second World War , the neo-Gothic parish church was completely destroyed except for the walls of the choir. After removing the rubble and securing the preserved choir walls, today's church was built between 1951 and 1952 according to plans by the Rheydt architect Alfons Leitl . The consecration took place on October 19, 1952.

Building description

St. Josef is a single-nave hall church in the form of modernism with a widened altar area in the east and an adjoining three-sided closed choir, which is the last remaining remainder of the previous church from 1898/99. The nave is spanned by a wooden-paneled gable roof . The bell tower stands next to the north wall and is connected to the rest of the church by a corridor. The west gable, like the roofs, is completely slated , as is customary in the Monschauer Land.

Furnishing

In the church there is a pietà from the 15th century. The rest of the equipment is modern. The choir area with ambo and altar was redesigned in 1974 by Günther Niesen from Simmerath . The organ is a work of the Hellenthal company Weimbs Orgelbau from 1968/72 and has 14 registers . The stained glass windows in the nave were designed and installed by Klaus Iserlohe in 1990. In the passage to the tower there are eighteen stained glass depicting the litany of St. Representing Joseph. The windows were designed in 1940 by Anton Wendling for the choir of the neo-Gothic church, but could no longer be made or used due to the war. After the war, the designs were finally implemented and used at the current location.

Bells

In 1956, the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen cast  three bronze bells with the striking tones for the St. Josef Church: es ′ - g ′ - b ′. The bells have the following diameters: 1305 mm, 1035 mm, 871 mm. The bell has a total weight of 2617 kg.
