history

The parish of Wollbach emerged from the original parish of Brend in 1421 or earlier .

All that is known about a church that was probably built in the early Middle Ages is that in 1587 it was found to be “too small and sparsely equipped”. It is likely to be the late Romanesque church, to which the still existing substructure of the church tower belonged.

For this reason, a new church was built in 1602. In 1617 the steeple was raised.

Until a monstrance was purchased in 1611, a monstrance was borrowed from Würzburg ; the altar was only consecrated in 1626.

When this church became too small, a plan to build a new church in 1880 met with funding concerns. The plans became urgent again in 1886 when the authorities classified the church, built in 1602, as "damp and unhealthy", so that it was demolished in 1888 and a new building was prepared. Parts of the demolished church were built into the Wollbacher Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle am Leiterich .

On May 3, 1890, the foundation stone was laid for the new neo-Gothic church, the construction costs of which were initially set at 62,000 DM , which increased by 2,800 DM due to an extension of the church building by one meter. During the construction period, the services were held in the school building. On August 9, 1896, the church with its 48 meter high tower was consecrated by the Würzburg bishop Franz Joseph von Stein .

In 1917 two church bells and 37 organ pipes were melted down for war purposes. In 1921 it was decided to purchase two new donation-financed bells .

In the course of a major renovation in 1951, two new bells and an electric bell system were installed; In 1955 a heating system followed, which was enlarged in 1977.

As part of a general renovation in 1963, the altar was replaced by a new high altar , which was consecrated on September 14, 1963. In 1975 the sacristy was refurbished and four years later the altars were redesigned. With the exterior renovation completed in 1984, the church got a new tower clock. In 1991 the belfry had to be replaced by a wooden structure due to construction defects. In this context, another bell was installed and inaugurated on July 14, 1991. In 1995 the statue of St. Bernadette was built next to the Mariengrotto . In 2008 the organ was completely renovated.

The nave has three window axes and two windows on the western wall. The eastern choir with five-eighth closing has three windows. All windows are ogival with tracery . The church tower on the south side is a slender Julius Echter tower . Its sound windows are also ogival with tracery.
