Winkeln (St. Gallen)
Winkeln is the westernmost quarter of the Swiss city of St. Gallen with almost 4,300 inhabitants.
geography
Winkeln is the urban quarter that is geographically most clearly demarcated from the city, as the deep moat of the Sitter in the east represents a clear natural boundary. The way into the city therefore always leads over one of the Sitterbrücken . In the south there is the local recreation area Gübsensee , on the southern side of which the municipal boundary to Herisau runs. In the west, the border to Gossau runs from the Alter Zoll along the Wiesenbach, through the Breitfeld to the Hafnersberg. In the north it runs just north of the A1 motorway , but the entire Grundmoos still belongs to the municipality of St. Gallen and thus to Winkeln.
The quarter consists of several former settlements: Kräzern above the Sitter crossing, which was the most important until the Fürstenland Bridge was completed in 1941; Picture north of the pond with the same name; Altenwegen on the way to Abtwil ; Hafnersberg am Hügel on the north side; Schoretshueb in the far west and angles themselves. With the exception of the group of houses in Hafnersberg, all these settlements have grown together today, but the names are still in use.
The townscape is shaped by several bodies of water: the Sitter in the east, the Gübsensee in the south, the Wiesenbach in the west and north and the Bildweiher in the center, through which the Walkebach flows and flows into the Chräzerenbach. This flows into the sitter.
history
At the picture, where the picture chapel stands today, the battle between Prince Abbot Ulrich von Sax of St. Gallen and Bishop Wernher of Konstanz took place in 1208 . The point of contention was whether Rheineck Castle belonged to St. Gallen or Constance. Ulrich von Sax had to admit defeat.
To this day, Winkel has been largely shaped by industry. Today, between the motorway and the railway line, all the way to Gossau, you will find one of the largest industrial districts in Eastern Switzerland, including the distribution centers of Coop , Migros and Spar and the Tagblatt printing house . Even earlier, the area on the Chräzerenbach with its mills was economically important. Ever since Prince Abbot Beda Angehrn built the new roads from St. Gallen through Winkeln to Wil and Herisau in the 1770s, the Sitter crossing had become an important trade route. The first stone bridge over the Sitter was built in 1811.
traffic
Winkeln is directly connected to the Swiss motorway network with the A1 motorway. Other important roads lead to Herisau and Abtwil . The Winkeln SBB station is on the St. Gallen – Wil – Winterthur line and is served by regional trains. On the railway line from St. Gallen to Herisau there is a stop above the Gübsensee . The trolleybus line 1 of the transport company of the city of St. Gallen connects Winkeln with the city center. The Regiobus AG runs between St. Gallen and Gossau and between Herisau and Abtwil through angles.
