location

The church is located on a hill in the Schefflenz Valley and can be seen from all sides.

history

In the Middle Ages there was a castle in Allfeld near today's parish church . This was destroyed in the Thirty Years War in 1646.

Connected to the castle was a castle chapel , which was preserved when the castle was destroyed and was dedicated to the patron saint St. George .

Parish Church of 1404 from Neudenau separate parish Allfeld was not the chapel, but St. Kilian Church (now St. Anne's Chapel ) at the cemetery because there was at that time the settlement center of the town.

In the Thirty Years War, not only the castle but also many houses in the village were destroyed. After the war, the surviving residents all settled near the castle chapel. This has since been used as a parish church.

When the population of the place grew again, the chapel soon became too small. Therefore, the construction of the new parish church began in 1742.

The builder of the new church was Georg Philipp Wenger from Neckarsulm , who also built the St. Laurentius Church in neighboring Neudenau in the same year .

On April 4, 1742, the altar of the old church was demolished. Then the old castle chapel was torn down. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on June 5, 1742 by the pastor Johann Adam Schwarz at the site of the previous church. Limestone and probably stones from the old church and the castle ruins were used in the construction.

The shell was completed in autumn 1743 . From the interior, the high altar and the chairs were present. On September 19, 1743, the provisional benediction of the church took place by the local priest Schwarz. The actual consecration took place at the end of October 1748 by the Würzburg auxiliary bishop Daniel Johannes Antonius Baron von Gebsattel . The new church was also dedicated to St. George.

In the following years the two side altars were obtained. In 1788 the flooring and the painting of the church were completed.

In 1929 the sacristy was rebuilt on the south side of the church . Until then, the basement of the tower on the north side was used as a sacristy.

In 1968 the choir was redesigned. The high altar was moved back to the wall, a celebration altar, an ambo and the eternal light lamp were purchased. A loudspeaker system was also installed.

Furnishing

In the choir room there is a statue of St. Anna , on the right the Virgin Mary. Next to it is a Gothic half-relief of St. Kilian . A large baroque cross hangs on the left.

On the left side of the nave there has been a baroque Pietà since the 1890s , next to it on the wall a statue of Mary as Queen of Heaven.

The stations of the Cross can be seen on the wall of the nave .

The only surviving ceiling painting shows the crucifixion of Jesus by a Walldürner painter.

Altars

The altarpiece in the high altar shows St. Georg fighting the dragon. Above is a picture of the Mother of God Mary with the baby Jesus in the manger surrounded by angels .

  • St. Ambrose with beehive, book and crosier
  • St. Agnes with little lamb
